AUS East-Coast Roadtrip Jan to Feb

Hello OzBargain!

My girlfriend and I are planning to roadtrip up the east-coast this Summer and wanted to get your help! We are from Melbourne and have around 4 weeks to get as north as Brisbane (perhaps) and back. We are in our early 20's and would enjoy anything from the beaches to alpine forest trecks.

We would appreciate any tips regarding:

. Places to go, including for how long (eg. We plan on staying in Sydney for 3-5 days? We can also revisit places on our return leg.)
. Accomodation
. Attractions
. Scenic roads
. Hidden gems
. And of course, this wouldn't be OzBargain without some money saving tips!

Thank you in advance!

  • Make sure you drop in to my local hangout Byron Bay. There are all forms of accommodation from camping to B&B's to Resorts. If your into it you could for around $30-$40 do a guided bus trip out to the hinterland into Nimbin for a laugh.

    • Thanks! Byron Bay is definitely on the list! Will we need to book far in advance? Or is it ok post-schoolies haha.

      • It depends on the type of accommodation you want. if it's mid Jan you would be safer to book. Camping should be ok half to end Jan, but for the closest one to town only 2 mins from CBD and beach ( First Sun ) safer to book for ealy to mid Jan. There are four others, one equally busy near Clarks Beach, the other 3 further out and cheaper. There are Youth Hostels, Backpackers ( double rooms ), all types of Motels and resorts ( non cheap ), you could even do a spot of woofing ( work on organic farm ) for free or subsidised accom. and food.

A few years ago I got a deal for a one way campervan from Cairns to Melbourne for about 10 days for $35(site now defunct).

Here is the most recent deal. At the moment there isn't much due to the season, but that will pick up after December school holidays.

    • Great idea.
