PS4 Broke

Hi all,

I bought a PS4 from Harvey Norman on the 18-DEC-2013 and have used it intermittently throughout the year.

About a week ago, it ejected my disc in the middle of a game and I was unable to reinsert the disc without turning the entire console off. Initially, I thought this was a once off, but it has since happened multiple times. A quick google search has determined that this is a common problem with the first release consoles and only permanent fix is to send into Sony to repair.

I know the ideal process for them would be to send it in to Sony for repairs, however, consumer guarantees that I should have "Undisturbed possession of the goods".

My question is: am I entitled to a refund at Harvey Norman?

  • "Undisturbed possession of the goods".

    ??
That means that everything you buy will work 100% of the time? Never happen.
The retailer will assess the item and either repair, replace or refund.

  • Is this the same problem as the disc auto-ejecting constantly?

They would normally expect to be able to send it off for repair first
Then if it is returned and still faulty I would think you have the right to demand a refund

Id try Sony direct anyway as going through Harvey will slow things down,

When my xbox 360 played up they told me to take it to Australia post and they had a box ready to return it, it was simple , I got another xbox in a week.

    Return it to Sony.

Same thing happened to me about 6 months ago. Was playing Battlefield 4 online, console beeped multiple times, ejected the disc and wouldn't accept it again. Found a temporary fix to put it vertically, it worked in this position. Accepted discs, at least. But wouldn't spit them out now. Had to remove the side cover and manually eject the disc.

After this point, it would only boot in recovery mode, with none of the limited options working. Rang up Sony the day after, gave them my serial (ring with console in front of you), they sent me an email with a postage-paid print out label and instructions.

Took everything to the post office (just the console, not controls / cables) and they packaged it up for me. A week later, received a brand new one in the post, new control etc.

Pain in the ass, but definitely worth it.

When my Xbox 360 broke in the warranty period (it broke 3 times all up) I just took it back to dick smith showed them the problem and they gave me a new one.

The third time it was well out of the normal warranty period but it got the red ring of death and Microsoft gave an extended warranty (5 years I think) to any one with this or similar problems, and they gave me a postage label so I sent it to them for free and and got it repaired pretty quickly

I'd say take it to the store you bought it from and see what they say, If it is a minor problem it is there right to repair (one or two things aren't working), but if it is a major problem (the whole thing doesn't work) it is your right to request either a repair, replacement or refund.

The phrase "undisturbed possession of the goods" means that no one has the right to take the goods away or prevent you from using them. It doesn't mean that you won't be without the goods while they are being repaired (in a reasonable timeframe).

I agree with the others here though. Contacting Sony directly is the quickest way.

    • Ah yes, thanks for clarifying. I figured I had interpreted this incorrectly.

  • Boy I sure love buying into the console wars immediately after release of the new ones.

    Cough

Sincerely, owner of a 5 time warranty Xbox360.

    • I have a cupboard full of them. Even the staff at EB admit that there aren't any good games for the new consoles yet. Happens every time there are new consoles.

      • I think I learnt my lesson with the poor manufacturing quality of the early 360 not to do it again. I'll wait til there are no more reports of PS4's asploding.

And games. May be waiting a while.

Contact Sony, mine died and Sony asked me to go back to the retailer with my console and gave me a reference number.

JBHIFI swapped the console over the counter the same day after I gave them the reference number so they could sort out getting a replacement from Sony.

I bought mine from dicksmith and had the some problem. I went there and they said "automatic replacement" once they entered the serial number or whatever. you can try asking Harvey Norman first or just send it to Sony. the warranty for PS4 is one year.

    • I wonder if they are selling the old ones are refurbs once fixed or if they just write them off

      • maybe they refurb them thru eb games, or just use the parts for other faulty consoles

Its within a year, Harvey should fix or replace it for you (might just replace it, depends on what the company's internal policy is). No reason to go through sony yourself unless you want to.

    • I did call up Harvey Norman and they said they'll try fix it first. If I had purchased the Harvey Norman warranty, then they would have replaced it.

  • Thanks all. So I ended up calling Sony and they were really helpful. They guided me through the steps to fix it (reset to default settings and restore database). So I think its resolved now.

Just happy I didn't have to go through posting it and organising someone to be home for collection as I will be overseas for the next 5 weeks.

make sure the problem will not resurface. I did the all of those steps and my PS4 was acting weird again after few weeks. so it might not be the permanent solution.

Deal directly with Sony and you'll have it replaced hassle free with free postage and packing within a week. Deal with HN and you'll have nothing but trouble.
