What am I missing that makes this not such a great deal?

One difference is the LTE/4G bands. Not issue in Australia but if you plan to use the phone in the US, 4G won't work.

OnePlus One deals since June. That means people have been buying that phone without an invite for at least 4 months.
OPO Started at 299 USD for 16GB version. It seems after 4 months in the market, the price has gone up by 70USD.
This is the first phone to go up in price.

Hey guys, so I was holding off on getting the OnePlus One until the Nexus 6 was announced. Now that it has, it's $650 US price tag is a bit high. I was just wondering what the best places to get the OPO for? I'm hoping to get the 64gb. Cheers!

Have you considered LG G2? Its a very good phone for the price… We have both G2 and OPO and IMHO the main advantage OPO has over G2 is CM11S. Other than that G2 is an excellent device.
Nothing really. There are plenty of other ways to obtain a Oneplus One without invitations. They are usually the Chinese version, no difference other than the software which can be easily changed (usually the seller changes it for the buyer). For example I bought my 64GB for $361 during the eBay 15% off sale. Many others bought from DWI as well.
