Home Insurance for an Apartment That Has Never Been Insured before

I called an insurance company today and they told me they can't offer me any insurance plan because this unit has never been insured before. Can anyone tell me why and how can I get an insurance for it please?

The unit is about 3 years old.

  • That sounds like crap to me; why would it matter what the "insurance history" of a place was?!? It makes no sense. What company did you call?

  • Real Insurance.

    • Oh call a real insurance company for the first year then get quotes from others on renewal.

      • Oh call a real insurance company

Apparently thats what OP did !

    "sorry can't be bothered"

From what you've posted, you're presumably looking for building insurance for a strata property - in which case you should first see which company the strata manager recommends.

Then call around yourself, do a bit of research, because strata companies apparently get a commission once the the property is signed up ie the policy cld neither be the best suited nor the cheapest, merely the one that yields the best commission for the strata manager's company.

Note : Are you sure the property has been uninsured for 3 whole years though? You should check with your strata manager.

  • I worked for Westpac General Insurance and we never cared if it hadn't been insured before, only if there was existing damage or the person taking out the policy had criminal convictions. Just ring someone else

  • ring someone else. small insurance companies would take your money, but when you make the claim and most in need, the first thing is not to look after you but to validate whether you have a policy with them - ie can they deny your claim. save anything else but not on insurance. learnt my lesson. stay away from the supermarkets one.

    • Did u have a bad experience with Coles or Woolies insurance Eatwell? Care to share?

      • Close relative switched to Coles when it started. New car got hit from behind and sandwiched. Luckily car crumbed but total lost. Even it was not her fault, she had to chase up consistently before paid cheque after months. With AAMI - 2 minor claims with dented doors. From claim to fix only 5 days. Never had to chase up , taxi voucher to pick up and drop off between home and repairers, after care phone call to make sure you are happy.

Over 15 years with NRMA, never once has any claim issue with NRMA in the whole family. With Woolies - an accident happened. Fill in your claim form online as customer service opens only between working hours. Don't mention customer service as no comparision to NRMA or AAMI. First thing they do is not about getting your car fixed and back to the road. They get a third party credit reference company to check on your claim history because they do not have your previous record. Got sent to get further details from previous insurer and wasted half a work day. They interviewed you with the same questions as if getting a new quote and record the conversation. All this to see if you actually have a policy with them (validation) after you have been paying the premium. Nearly 1 month and no authorisation to fix. Have to worry whether they will do the right thing and pay, Need mentally prepared to go Insurance Ombudsman for help if need.

        • I thought maybe the issue was with Home Buildings insurance….anyway thanks for the info (good to know)
