Home Theatre Projector

Hi All….I am in the process of setting up a media room in my home and want your suggestions on a reasonably priced and best projector, projector mount, 100-110 inch fixed screen, AV receiver and speakers. I am trying to limit the cost under $3000. What are your recommendations?

hmm.. Video Pro has this Projector for just over 3k. VPL HW30ES … $3147 so blow all money just on this!

Seriousl I would look at it though just to see how much more you get for your money against a $1200- $1800 Projector..

    http://www.projectorcentral.com/Sony-VPL-HW30ES.htm

Check out They have some packages that have screen projector etc.. although I would Get the mount and screen cheap enough on ebay.

I would go and have a look.. see what you get for your money..

I have had a few projectors in my day.. currently a benq DLP.. and am most impressed by the Sony

Sound is another area all together, depends how loud you can have it.. JB have decent deals sometimes

Just because a brand can make a good amp doesn't mean they make good speakers :-)

At this budget, I'd say go second hand if you want a decent quality setup.

I actually have a fixed Carada Criterion Series Brilliant White 100" screen that I'd be happy to sell. Carada projector screens are world class and are not sold in Australia. I had mine shipped from the US at a huge expense just because I'm very particular about my A/V components. PM me if you are interested (although, I haven't used the OzB PM function before).

Personally I think Sony have the best AV receivers, not the loudest but the cleanest and that's what matters. Unfortunately they only have one high end receiver with the DA5800ES and it's really expensive. I'm not sure about their lower end stuff.

Check out Sony's new CS range

Pretty affordable, and it would seem some of their awesome higher end design has bled into them.

this is the projector i use, the image quality is fantastic (atleast all my friends seem to think so when they come over for a movie night) not a bad price as well (includes free delivery) - http://www.myav.com.au/epages/mymy7204.sf/en_AU/?ObjectPath=…

    • Hi kbear, checked with myav.com.au, they don't have TW6100W package in stock. Instead they are selling TW6600 for $2365 (just the projector - not package). I am still looking at options

      • That sucks, the other place i was considering was "http://www.thecableconnection.com.au/" only went with myav cause they were cheaper overall !.

I have benq w1070 - it does 1080p im more than happy with it, (projecting 126") quality wise if the rooms dark, Its as good as the samsung 60" in lounge
or theres the w1080st if you need short throw projector, Basicly the same otherwise…
I found the best deal, and Office Works price beat for around $840 i think it was, From $990 shelf price

I bought a $200 optiwerx screen from ebay, (fixed screen) I have no complaints, Except was quite a challenge to get all the springs on when assembling, took 2 people
I was quite worried about the quality of the screen prior buying, But Im not sure how much value between a $2k-3k screen to ours would be, Ours is great, Not sure if its a marketing thing, But I would rather spend $200 and waste that, Than buy a $2k screen and be disapointed…

Surround sound- I already had Muteki Sony 7.2 surround sound, $750 from good guys (price tag $999) If you have the room like i do (42sq.m room) We have no complaints, Although the audiophiles always talk down this system, but never answer why… Wasnt so good in our old lounge, Was way to big, Really need a room our size or slightly smaller to enjoy the power of the system

Bought some ajustable roof mount bracket from ebay.. Does the job…
same as this, cheaper if get one from china if can wait…
    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/PRJ-102-Projector-Bracket-Ceiling…

Jaycar have some speaker mounts that I mounted to roof, $19.99 a pair, Needed 2 pair, Although I did find them cheaper somewhere elce cant remember where bout half the price delivered, But I needed them now, as had electrician around following day..

We didnt spend alot on our setup, And glad we didnt, Because What we got now we are more than happy with what we got..

    • Hi wako, does benq w1070 has lens shift and what about the rainbow effect - heard a lot about it from various reviews. Did you experience any such thing?

      • +1

I have not noticed any rainbow effects, We have had it going for just over 3 months now, our projector is roof mounted 363cm back for a 124" image…

        Yes it has lens shift
one dial for zoom and one for focus

The only issue we have had so far is, That using a 10m HDMI cable from projector to amp, For some reason the sony blueray cuts in and out (image cuts out for 3-5 seconds 2-3 times through a movie)
Most people I have asked said its because the cable is too long, But it doesnt happen with PS4,PS3,Roku so im not 100 sure whats causing it, I have a samsung bluray Im going to try next time we use it, Which isn't often anyhow.

Got the Benq today, just fired it up at work Manufacture date was Oct 2013, I see that they have firmware up to 1.08 I was concerned about this however on firing it up, checked lamp hours 0, and firmware 1.08 sweet!!

I have screen coming so will have to wait for that but will go to bunnings for a shelf to mount it on!

Looking forward to seeing quality.. see how the sub $1k theater goes LOL.. so tempted to get the LG 9.1 system then would be a $2k system :-P

    • Great…Let us know how the quality is..!!

  • hooked up the screen and projector, input recommended calibration settings, wow what a great picture.

Blacks are real nice too. so good for the money .. didn't notice fan noise but was in eco.. which is plenty bright enough on the 120" screen .. 1.2 gain (apparently)

but after having projectors for years this my 4th can say am not sure how much more you would need…

Cant wait to try 3D.. got Avatar from Dick Smith $5 so will see how it looks

    • great….how far is the projector from the screen….I am planning a 110" screen with ceiling mounted projector 4.2m away…!!! I hope that will work for Benq w1070.

  • you will need much closer for ceiling mount. prob 3 mtrs but I would position on table set zoom etc.. then you know where the "sweet" spot is.. I have approx 4mtrs back was hoping to do shelf but way to big a projection for my 120" screen. Got the 3d glasses today so will try Avatar tonight,,

  • yes 3D is very good, wow I think is a great all round performer. A+ Benq
