Anyone Stayed in a Cheap Japanese-Style Hotel around Tokyo?

Hey, some friends(~8 people) and I are planning to go to Japan next year, staying in Tokyo for a week and then going to Osaka for the 2nd week, and we really wanted to stay at a Japanese style hotel. Has anyone stayed at one they would recommend?

  • Ryokans are great! Though not the cheapest option… though there are some with a hostel feel that are more budget minded, they are great too!

I would mix it up, some Ryokans + Business Hotel (Toyoko Inn I highly recommend) to save on the budget…

Unfortunately I stayed at Toyoko Inns in Tokyo and Osaka so can't recommend anything, I actually stayed at Shinjuku in Tokyo wandering at night was ummm "interesting"…

Miyajima (Hiroshima) is AMAZING… I definitely recommend a night at one of the Ryokans there (rather than a day trip there) if you are going…

  • +1

You can always try a capsule hotel as well! Stayed at the Green Plaza in Shinjuku before

    • LOL… I heard it's an interesting experience, I will definitely try next time I'm in Japan…

But from the stories my mates have told me… Drunk naked Salary Men watching porn above, below and to the side of you… doesn't sound that enticing…

  • We were in Japan two weeks ago, stayed at Ryokan Kamogawa in Asakusa. It was reasonably priced, 7 nights for 2 adults & 2 children for about $1500. The bedding was extremely comfortable and air conditioning worked very well. We had unlimited free Wi-Fi and the inn had a shared family sized hot bath. The bath area had a lock which meant we had it to ourselves when we wanted to use it. Check it out on Trip Advisor. Asakusa is a bustling area and you can catch a direct train there from the airport for about $13 per adult. Enjoy your trip!

  • I can recommend http://www.sawanoya.com/. Been a while since I stayed there but it's in Ueno (close to the park, subway, etc). Walking distance to Ueno train station. English speaking staff, affordable, and simple, elegant rooms.

Sawanoya is at the lower end of the price scale. As with everything, it depends on your budget. Some $300/night places will blow your mind but probably also your budget.

It's a family run business and the doors close 11pm. That may be unsuitable if you're planning to party into the night and miss the last train home.

  • there are also minshukus which are similar to Ryokans. but more budget. B&B style. i stayed in one in Sapporo. great experience.
