Upgrading Early 09 20' iMac

G'day everyone,

It's been a while since I've properly looked for hardware, but I want to upgrade my girlfriend'a iMac with more RAM and and an SSD.

The interface if I recall is only SATAII and was wondering I anyone knows of decent drives at a good price. I figured SATAII are cheaper.

I'm also wondering where to find some cheap RAM kits. I need 8GB 2x4Gb but I think the max speed is 1066 if anyone could help me out much appreciated.

Mosha.

  • Bad news for you:

    1) Old RAM tech is generally more expensive than current RAM. Once it's out of current production runs, the price rises over time. But you might be able to get some on ebay if you're not fussed about where it comes from.

    2) You won't be able to buy a new sata 2 ssd… None available. Get the cheapest one for the current size that you want. Sata 3 is backwards compatible. Since the bandwidth on sata 2 is less, you don't need to worry about getting a performance model, and the slower speeds on the lower capacity drives won't be much of an issue. I think sata 2 tops out at around 280mb/s… But a google search will confirm that.
