Student Email Addresses - short/cheap courses to get one

Apologies if this has been discussed before but I can't find it.

There are a few discounts out there available to those with student email addresses. Is there a legitimate way to obtain one of these by doing a short, easy course at an online university? Preferably an interesting one! Any ideas or suggestions?

It's probably theoretically possible to get a .edu.au address by signing up to any course, using the email address and then dropping out before payment is due, but that's really unethical.

Just out of curiousity, what discounts are available to those with student/uni email addresses? :)

the discounts are certainly less than the cost of doing a course!

      • Yeah, but if you were interested in doing one anyway, and didn't have anything specific in mind…

    • Software, mostly, especially Microsoft stuff.

The main problem is when you withdraw/complete the course, your email address will be revoked shortly after.

You could apply for a University course (on a HECS or FEE-HELP basis) and defer each semester prior to the ‘census date’ (date the bill for the course gets charged to your account with .gov)

    • I think it depends.

If there's an alumni you get to keep your emails.

      Fyi, Sydney uni does this

  • Better to get a job at a university.. free email address + income ;-)

  • I work in education sector but found not much to gain with .edu email address. I'm also curious, why you want to spend that much just for .edu address :)

Try this one out, it's free. I made an account yesterday.
Go to the below link to create your free .edu email address. :)

    • You can obtain an .edu address via californiacolleges but they have disabled their email server thus incoming email doesnt work :(

Worked for me! Now…. what do I want to get a student discount for? :)

        • Well lads I must sincerely apologise for my comment above - I stand corrected because my .edu account is now working. One month ago it was definitely not working, so there you go!

    • This website no longer supports the creation of a @californiacolleges.edu e-mail address.

  • Free (well, funded) TAFE courses are best. Currently doing an IT course (Cert II), you receive a personal .edu.au email included when you enroll.
