Flying to US (from Melb) around Xmas - What Would You Consider Good Value?

I'd be interested in feedback from people that have made this trip the past couple of years around Xmas - as I imagine there are some here. I've got some flexibility on dates. From what I've seen, leaving Dec 20th (Sat) or 21st (Sun) you really get drilled, but if you go the few days before then, or on the 22nd or later, it's not as bad.

I've found some RT flights through Virgin for Dec 22nd - Jan 4th just over the $1,800 mark into LAX. I don't have to go into LAX.

Would this be considered good value given the peak time, or are there better bargains that can be had?

Thanks,

  • I'd be looking at the tools like Kayak that allow you to check a matrix of flight details for the best times/dates/carriers.

In general the earlier you fly, the better. eg

Interestingly flying back on the 1st seems to be cheaper than just a day or two later. 23:00 on New Year's Day is practically the second anyway, New Year's Eve is over, and you arrive on the 3rd in Oz. It also allows you to push the outward leg earlier for the same holiday length and lower overall prices.

  • Mate, $1800 is excellent for peak time. That's the average price you'd get during off peak times if there is no special or deal being advertised. I've been struggling with the same concept - how much is too expensive but in my case, Sydney to London comes to about $3000!! I did the maths and tried some alternative routes, but no luck…

If it's $1800 I reckon go for it. With my flight search I noticed flights on 31 December were much cheaper than 1 Jan, 2 Jan, etc.
