Stores in Shopping Centres Agreeing to Non-Compete Services with Other Stores in Centre. (e.g. Women Haircuts)

Reddit: barber not allowed to cut woman's hair due to lease he signed

Basically, there is a barber and a stylist in this shopping mall (most likely a Westfields). The barber is only allowed to cut mens hair and said barber gave a haircut to a woman and in turn got a warning from the centre management. Non-competes are quite often used for supermarkets. When was the last time you saw a (EDIT: A New Centre) shopping centre with a Coles and a Woolworths (Brunswick is the only one I've seen)?

Just wondered if anyone has seen similar non-compete rules for other stores?

There definetely is; in a lease agreement a family friend had as a florist it clearly stated they were the only ones that were allowed to sell flowers inside that mall but specifically said "excluding Woolworths".

I've also heard of Coles/Woolworths being in shopping centres with free rent as it attracts the customers, without customers you don't have the other 30-40 shops renting those spaces.

I've also heard Woolworths and Coles can also call the shots on where other shops end up, recently in a nearby shopping mall Woolworths told the tobacconist to move from being next to them, to the opposite side of them as they were getting more tobacco sales then Woolworths.

  • Ive seen plenty of shopping centres that have Coles and Woolworths in them….Brimbank Central, Werribee Plaza

    • Yeah, I guess its more of the newly built centres (e.g. within the last 15-20 years) that have either or.

      • Westfield Fountain Gate used to have Woolworths, Coles and Bi-Lo. When Bi-Lo went under they changed it to another coles and it was within 50 metres of the other coles. That being said there is now just one coles and one woolworths and they are at opposite ends of the complex.

    • Watergardens has two Woolworths and one Coles. Built in '97 so pretty new.

  • "When was the last time you say a shopping centre with a Coles and a Woolworths (Brunswick is the only one I've seen)"
I'm assuming you mean barkly square.
Broadmeadows & Roxburgh Park have them in the same centre.

  • Macquarie Centre has both of the Coolies and Aldi making 3 competing supermarkets under the same roof since they expanded recently.

  • IGA recently (6-12 months) moved out of our local shopping centre, to be replaced by Coles. Woolworths were already in the centre and they both trade there now. There was already a Coles within a 3 minute drive.
