Network Media Player

I am looking for a decent network based media player.

I currently have all my media hosted on a NAS and stream it to a jailbroken Apple TV 2 which I want to sell.

I would prefer something that can access the shares over SMB as I find DLNA can take some time to index new files.
I would also prefer not to have an android based player as I have had issues with them in the past.

I am however open to any and all suggestions.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Roku 3 off Amazon or WD TV Live Player?

    • I looked at the Roku 3 but it looks like it only supports DLNA?

      • Yea, it doesn't support SMB.

  • Hi Samsung
The Nexus player looks good ,just there is only WIFI connection, looks it ll be hard to stream HD.
    Cheers :-)

    • If you got a Ethernet port near your tele put a WD750/WD900 router it is dam cheap from msy. It serves four purposes 1. Giving a decent WiFi connection to devices in a 5 meter range 2. You can connect your smartphone to this control nexus player thorough remote app. 3. Connect an external hdd to router and use it is as DLNA/FTP/Itunes Server.4. Gigabit 4 port connection to rest of your devices.

  • I know you said no android based player but I love my raspberry pi XBMC kit. You should check it out.

All setup to my network shares on my HP Microserver, works great!

    • Thanks. I have a raspberry pi and it's great but it's just too slow at buffering HD content.

  • Thanks for all the replies guys. I found this in my cupboard that I completely forgot I had. I shelved it a few years ago as it didn't suit my setup at the time but it works like a charm and does everything I need.
