Netflix and Chromecast DNS Issue (Locked DNS Telstra Router)

I bought the Chromecast, but cannot get Netflix working on it as I have setup Unblock-Us etc; but my CG3100 Router cannot be DNS changed at all. This is a known issue stoping lots of people; I am curious to see if there are any other options? I can now watch Netflix on my computer; and phone. But cannot stream it to my TV.

When I cast it to the Chromecast it says "Sorry, we are not available in this country." I have added the Static IP (8.8.8.8) to block it, still nothing,

  • Sorry if this doesn't answer your question but I never had to change the DNS on my router ever when I needed to watch something on netflix. I would always change the DNS either on the ipad or xbox one. Or do you need to do it with a chromecast?

When you stream Netflix from your PC/phone to your Chromecast, you're not really streaming it. You're telling the Chromecast to go fetch the content from Netflix itself. This is why if you kill the Netflix app on your phone, the Chromecast will still keep playing whatever you are watching on Netflix.

If you can't change the DNS settings on your router, then you would need to change the DNS on the Chromecast, which you can't.

One alternative would be to connect a computer via ethernet to your router, change the DNS settings on your computer and then hotspot an Internet connection from your computer to your Chromecast. Effectively you're putting your PC with the right DNS settings between your Chromecast and your router. Use a smartphone to connect to the computer hotspot network and stream Netflix to your Chromecast with your phone.

  • Since you can't change your router's DNS.

Change DNS on your PC so it can use Netflix.
Open the Netflix on Chrome Browser
Fire up netflix and play a movie
Cast the tab from Chrome allowing Audio as well.

    • while a good idea in theory, in practice……..

      • Yeah. It's a great idea, except on TV it still boots up the Netflix app…. I have managed to do this on the TV with my phone; except you can't get high quality as movie/shows are fitted for my note 3 screen, than pixelates as it expends for TV.

        • Don't click the cast button on the Netflix website, click cast tab on chrome browser with audio. I've used that before and it won't launch the Netflix app on your tv.

        • @shadowarrior: I did try it; but there is a massive lag….

The Tutorial found here helped me. Might work for you, but I am not on a Telstra Network.

If it comes back to the issue that you cannot change things as discussed in the tute then the alternative is to buy another cheap router, which you connect to the existing router, but log on via that with your chromecast.

    • That's what I've been looking at; thanks mate.
