In August, we let you know that we were sponsoring Beta Bar, a gaming based bar by some of the former staff at Mana Bar. The long term plan is to get a full time venue that combines gaming and a bar BUT with an emphasis on the gaming. In the meantime, they will be holding regular events until they secure a venue.

Venue: Portland Hotel (Upstairs)

Date: Oct 31 to Nov 01

Length: 07:00 pm - 03:00 am

So we have 5 passes for Friday, 5 for Saturday and 5 for Sunday (Oct 31, Nov 1, Nov 2). It will be a huge night as PAX is in town.

With over 40 Board/Card Games, XBOX ONE, PS4, XBOX 360, PS3, Oculus Rift, Arcades, Guitar Hero on Stage, Retro Consoles, Special Guests, Giveaways, Competitions & cheap Beer!!
For 3 nights over PAX Aus we’re keeping the party going!
Pull up a chair, grab a jug of Beer or Cider and settle down with your friends for a game of Cards Against Humanity, Mario Kart, Settlers of Catan, Broforce or go for a spin on a Rollercoaster on our Oculus Rift Arcade!

Note: 18+ (It's a bar!)

OK, so to get a pass:

  • Tell us in the comments below what retro gaming console or retro technology you still use and enjoy.
  • Tell us your preference of which night you wish to attend.

We'll let you know on Thursday if you have won passes.

Moderators will judge best entries.

  • OK, so my most frequently used retro device is my iPad 1 which is 4 years old however I still use everyday for Twitter mostly but occasionally playing games. Works great, great battery.

My favourite retro gaming device was my N64. I played Mario Kart and Golden Eye for ages. Well, I currently have a Wii (with Wii Fit, Band Hero etc.) but it sits mostly idle by my TV.

  • Whilst not a drinker, I am going to PAX. This isn't designed to be an entry as even if I won I wouldn't likely show up, this is more of a bump so other people remember to enter since no one seems to have yet.

The most retro console I have connected to my TV is my Wii. However I do have an Atari 2600 and a Commodore64 sitting at my parents place in storage.

  • Never get tired of NES console playing battletoads fighting it out with Player 2 for the better weapons.
    Prefer friday night.

  • Still got my Gameboy Color playing my Pokémon Red and switching it up with Mario.
    Prefer Sunday night.

  • I still use a VCR to watch Robin Williams movies like Hook.
I'm going on Saturday night. Coz everybody loves a Saturday night! Saturday Night!

  • My first console I've received was a console my dad bought, it was the Sega Master System II. You could imagine the amount of time I've spent on this console. I especially wont forget being yelled at by Mum almost everyday for over excessive use and trying to skip dinner.

    Prefer a Saturday Night.

  • Occasionally hooking up my CRT monitor to play asteroids & Doom on a partitioned windows 98' drive (Well worth it).
My favorite old retro gaming console would be the SNES with the Gameboy adapter. Pokemon yellow and Kirby were the first games I've played and will never forget. Honorable mention, playing duke nukem on the Playstation 1!

    Prefer Saturday night :)

  • might not win too many points with this one but i always have connect 4 (retro technology enough?) on standby at my house parties. diss it all you want but once it's out, it's game on. people really get whirled up about it. someone mentioned "guess who". i'd love to revisit that game. ah, old memories.

    friday for moi.

  • not sure if this is retro , but i had a yellow tamagotchi when i was younger and that was best thing present i received. It sure kept me entertained because I would be always feeding and cleaning poop..i had a very fun childhood. I passed it on to my niece, who still enjoys it as much as i did.

sat or sun any will do.

  • I have an old little handheld game where you were a caveman and had to steal dinosaur eggs and avoid falling lava; (see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j429zhJH1gU) I plugged it in after leaving it for 15 years and was pleasantly surprised that it still worked!

    Saturday please

  • The N64 has a special place in my childhood memories, and I always enjoy revisiting games such as Banjo Kazooie and Super Mario 64.

    Sunday.

  • undoubtedly my first generation Xbox. Booting up Halo 1 for the first time blew me away. The stunning visuals, lifelike (at the time) character models and awesome soundtrack made it one of if not the best titles ever released on Xbox, and paved the way for Microsoft exploration into the console industry.

Sunday ideally, but any day is fine :)

  • Love playing any of the SNES Donkey Kong games with the missus, I'm always DK, she needs the extra airtime! Also AFL on the NES "Out of bounds, on the full" With the kicks sounding like the player just smashed their foot on a brick. Special mention Goldeneye! Me and my bro were all over that. I ended up buying the console that does NES and SNES in one.

    Prefer Sat.

  • I spent a greater portion of the weekend than I'd like to admit practicing moves with friends on the N64 with Super Smash Bros in preparation for the Wii U title. Winning player each round "scored" the dodgey controller.

Sat night would be awesome but Friday would be cool too! :D

  • +2

OK, if I've calculated this right, I think everyone here has won.

    I'll contact you all shortly.

  • So I went and paid at the door this weekend and had a great time.
Any chance of more ticket giveaways for the next event? Would like a bring a few friends with me, who otherwise wouldn't pay to go such a thing… See if I can get them hooked :)

    Cheers

    • Yeah most definitely. We should get tickets to all future events however the Beta Bar crew also need to build their business. They sold out for the 3 nights it was running which is great.

Long term, we are planning to host a free OzBargain meetup at Beta Bar so stay tuned.
