TV Remote dying... Replace with like model vs universal

Guys

My Sony TV remote is dying.. Some of the buttons are unresponsive (unless you press really hard) and not surprisingly they are the buttons we use all the time.

I've cracked the unit open, and the buttons push metallic domes.. Unfortunately I can't service them. So it has come down to replacing them.

A new Sony remote will cost me $100. It will probably fail again in a few years time, but it will work straight out of the box.

Alternatively, I can ditch a few remotes (BD, Speakers, and TV) and use a universal remote. The trouble is my prior experience with one of these (a touch screen $50 job from DSE) was profoundly poor. And yet, the logitech units seem to get good reviews.

What's the general consensus on universal remotes these days?

  • Why don't you try and get HDMI CEC working and then you can use one of your existing remotes.

Just yell out," Honey, can you switch it to another channel? Honey, volume down please." Sorted.

Exhaustive research has highlighted that particular model also comes with a "Honey, grab me a beer will ya…" function!

      • Mine included a coupon in the box with a 10% discount at e-divorce.com.au

  • Got a smartphone with a IR blaster?
I use my LG G2 as a universal remote for my Sunbeam fan and crappy generic air conditioner… It can learn functions from an existing remote by recording the infrared pulse patterns and map them to a virtual remote onscreen.

    • Yeah, and a tablet with one too… The TV has an android R/C app too. But I want the tactile feedback of a button.

  • Get a new TV, they all come with a free remote

  • Something that actually works is to take the batteries out and slowly press every button one by one from the top through to the bottom.

I was amazed when that fixed my remote. Hope it works for you.

  • if you have an apple tv 4th gen siri remote, buy it a case on http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/apple-tv-remote-case-cover-silico…?
