American Express and The Value of Companion Cards

Hey All,

Couldn't think of a way of making this into a deal, but thought I should share my insight into this anyway via a forum post.

I currently own the ACS Platinum Edge $99/yr (Grandfathered rate, now $195 for new applicants) and a Green Charge Card $80yr

Called up Amex out of curiosity about the difference between the Gold/Green charge card and whilst I was talked out of upgrading (no real difference I've been told) I was also eligible to have the Platinum Edge had as a companion card!

Now this seems to be good value, especially if you do it in this order:

*Apply for a Platinum Edge first if there are offers currently available (referrals died earlier this year)
*Apply for a Green Charge Card
*Request for the Platinum Edge to sit under the green

This saves me $99 a year and still gets me the free flight and Membership Rewards for only $80 a year.

If someone is already in a position like this wants to try this out, by all means do so. Frankly, I was only aware this was only eligible for Gold Charge Card holders.

The question will be do you need that many cards and how will the credit limit affect your borrowing capacity?

    • Currently only have these two, no other credit cards. Platinum Edge for everyday/grocery expenses, Green for business expenses.

Limits can be reduced on the Platinum Edge when the time comes to borrow, which won't be for another three-five years.

So were you successful in getting the Plat Edge to sit under your Green charge?

        • Yes.

        • @EPICSALETIME:

Doesn't seem like AMEX offers Gold OR Green charge anymore. Only platinum :(

          I just realised this.. Woah!
