    In no particular order:
Shutter Island (top movie, with plot twist you won't expect)
    Inception
    Memento (one of the greats)
    Dark Knight Trilogy
    LOTR trilogy
Blood Diamond (also one of the greats)
    Goodfellas
Casino Royale (best Bond movie IMO)
    The Departed
The Prestige (mind-blowing in every sense - the viewer essentially becomes part of the movie. Watch it and you'll understand!)

basically anything directed by Christopher Nolan, you can't go wrong!

    • I have watched all the above mentioned movies other than The Departed and Memento.
I ll start with Memento (have a long lost to catch up now now) as a friend, who is a big fan of the movie, has recommended me several times.

    • This is a great list, I haven't watched a few but going by your other choices, I'll watch the ones I haven't, thanks.

    No Country for Old Men

And another vote for The Princess Bride…

    • +1

And another vote for The Princess Bride…

Inconcievable!!! I'll take some of that action too, awesome movie…in a similar vein, I also really enjoyed Mirror, Mirror, a highly underrated family flick with a fun ending! :)

  • Enter the Void. Fun for all the family. Two thumbs way up.

    • +1

Speaking of voids - Touching The Void was an excellent reproduction of an incredible true story of human will and survival.

  • +1

I recommend trying some Sci-Fi movies. If you've been avoiding them then you have a treasure trove to catch up on. From newer ones like 'The Avengers' to some old classics like Aliens , Terminator and Christopher Reeves version of Superman.

  • What is the actual point of this topic?

    • +1

Name a movie, any movie! But no sci-fi. Ok sci-fi.

  • +1

I usually watch movies for a dumb laugh so here are my picks

    Super trooper
Beerfest (Not as good but still stupidly funny)
    Happy Gilmore
    Billy Madison

If you don't mind subtitle or if you can understand cantonese

Early Stephen Chow movies (so ridiculous dumb but hilarious)

If you like to watch something with kids and still want something "artsy"

Highly recommend the Ghibli films by Hayao Miyazaki

Then there is the kid classics that features some of the disney princesses such as Aladdin etc.

    • +1

Early Stephen Chow movies (so ridiculous dumb but hilarious)

+1 - Kung Fu Hustle & Shaolin Soccer FTW! :)

      • +1

I love both those movies as well. That last part of Shaolin Soccer cracked me up. Reminded me of an old Gameboy Game I used to own.

        • +1

If you haven't seen it already, Chow's Journey to the West (2013) is also pretty good…classic Chow!

In a similar vein, the highly underrated The Butcher, the Chef, and the Swordsman (2010) is really worth a watch…despite some mediocre scores it's a classic; something really fresh; and a typical example of why all of these guys blindly quoting metacritic, IMDB & RT scores, and allowing someone else's arbitrary numbers (often based on some pretty narrow ideas) to influence their own opinion of a movie, are really only doing themselves a disservice!

        • @StewBalls:

I now know what my watching schedule over the weekend is going to be…..

        • +1

@JayM: I'm jealous…mine will probably be strongly focused on Peppa Pig & Octonauts! ;)

        • @StewBalls:

I'm not jealous of that G weekend. Think it's about time kids got introduced to some real tv shows/movies :P. Start off with some light watching with Lord of the Rings trilogy and finish the day with The Raid. You'll never watch peppa pig, octonauts or pokemon ever again!

        • +1

@JayM: If they play up too much, I'll put on Battlefield Earth! ;)

        • +1

          @StewBalls:

That's one way of making them move out of home at a very early age.

        • If you want the whole family to move out, put on Pink Flamingos, Salo, or Irreversible.

Fun for the whole family….if your family was related to Leatherface.

    • +1 Super Troopers

  • +1

    If you like depressive movies

    Dancer in the Dark
    Donnie Darko
    Requiem for a Dream
    Grave of the Fireflies

    • angel dust from japan is a beautiful and some say depressing film

  • +1

I am currently in the process of watching every James Bond movie in order. I would recommend doing this if you are a fan of the films!

  • Toilet Tarts

  • bollywood

  • Interstellar when it comes out.

  • +1

Watch the movie 'The Room' from 2003. It is without a doubt one of the best bad movies ever made. Some of best dialogue in film history!

  • Zoolander
    Inception
    Lego Movie
Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 1
    The Raid 1 and 2
    Battlefield Earth
    IP Man 1 and 2
    Ants
    Monsters Inc./University
    Toy Story 1, 2, and 3(?)
    Cars 1
    Studio Ghibli movies
    Phonebooth
    Die Hard Trilogy

    Spot the odd one out.

    • +1

I thought Battlefield Earth was supposed to be one of the worst movies ever made 11% on Rotten Tomatos.
I've never seen it are you suggesting it is worth a watch or is this a test?

      • +1

        Spot the odd one out.

      • it was a deviously bad test for people who know their movies. Funnily enough there'd be people out there who actually liked it. I really can't force myself to watch it in the minuscule chance that I may like or at least not hate it as much as it deserves.

You pass and so does SB.

Just finished watching XMen First Class and Inception.

        • Ok , I thought maybe it had achieved bad movie cult status or something, of which I include Peter Jackson's Bad Taste, Buckaroo Banzai, Bad Boy Bubby, even the Evil Dead Movies. I know I can hear protests already.
My litmus test is if my ex really, really loves it I am assured it is so far beyond B Grade that it is bound to become great.

    • +1

      Phonebooth- awful movie. :p

      • That movie had the smallest location budget ever. If that's the only movie you disagree with from my list then it's not so bad after all :).

Back on topic, another movie suggestion I have to make is 'The Game' with Michael Douglas. This topic seriously needed a specific genre of movie or what movie do you recommend if I like X movie.

      • For what it was.

        It was good.

  • I just quoted a line out of Chopper.

  • in no particular order:
    Gandhi
    mississipi burning
    3 idiots with english subtitles
    the best exotic marigold hotel
    walt disneys aladdin
    shawshank redemption
    the castle
    amadeus

my first piece of advice would be to understand that not all sci-fi films are the same. check out blade runner with harrison ford. it's a masterpiece. so is 2001: a space odyssey. alien & aliens & alien 3 are exceptional films no-one should miss out on seeing either. apollo 18 (not apollo 13), is also a lesser known gem. as is, moon.

as for any other films, well, there's so many i could suggest but i'll just let you know these…

    mute witness
    ray
    a woman under the influence
    la femme nikita
    the black stallion
the diving bell and the butterfly
    the taxi driver
eternal sunshine of the spotless mind
    faster pussycat! kill! kill!
    the big blue
    persona
    wild at heart
    gorillas in the mist
    true romance
    the hunger
    my own private idaho
    duel
    sophie's choice
    psycho
    rebecca
    donnie darko
    cape fear
    repulsion
    the exorcist
    amadeus
    near dark
    a room with a view
    the lady from shanghai
    gladiator
    a streetcar named desire
    babbette's feast
    resolution
    i love you to death
    identity
    memento
    midnight cowboy
    let the right one in
    yellow brick road
    the thing (1982)

  • OP that kind of question could break the Internet.

    You asked people's opinion?

Do you have a death wish sir?

  • Watched the Arnie flick Sabotage the other night; expected mediocre, got awesome.

  • 'detachment', 'primer' 'drive' are all good things I've seen recently. I really enjoyed 'cloud atlas' despite friends being disappointed with it

  • Sinister
    Insidious 1
    Insidious 2
    The conjuring
    Annabelle

  • Sex in the City!

  • Spoil yourself and grab a $10 movie ticket go see Gone Girl, best thriller movie EVER!!!!

  • I just watched August: Osaga County.
Great film - felt a bit like a play, but that's what you get when it's based on a play.

I'm not a fan of Meryl Streep or Julia Roberts, but they were both ripped off by not getting oscars for that.

    • Not a fan of Streep, even Roberts? Seen Sophie's Choice? Erin Brokovich?

      • Seen Sophie's Choice? Yep - the choice was heartbreaking. The acting was great as well, but something about Meryl Streep just doesn't do it for me. I've seen most of her films.

Erin Brokovich? - yep, overrated for acting. She wasn't that good. Great story. The special features on the dvd were better than the film.

Best actress around today IMHO is Emily Watson - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emily_Watson

    watch The Prestige!

It's a Christopher Nolan movie about magicians in the 19th century.

    Definitely one of my favourites.

  • 1408, robo cop, mulan, American history x, welcome to the jungle, cars, rocky.

  • The Cube
    Cube 2: Hypercube
    Cube Zero

Tom Hanks? Some of his notable movies:

    • Forrest Gump (1994)
TLDR <It's, well Forrest Gump =P>

    • Saving Private Ryan (1998)
      TLDR <WWII Normandy Invasion>

    • Cast Away (2000)
      TLDR <Modern day Robinson Crusoe>

    • The Terminal (2004)
TLDR <Foreign guy stuck in an American airport>

    • Captain Phillips (2013)
TLDR <Ship hijacked by Somalian pirates>

    • Catch Me If You Can (2002)
TLDR <Cheque forgery, this one is mainly Leonardo di Caprio though>

    • The Polar Express (2004)
      TLDR <Christmas movie>

    • Road to Perdition (2002)
      TLDR <Al Capone, mobsters, 1930's Great Depression>

These are just the ones I've watched and liked. If you like, I'd add links to reviews of your preference.
    =)

An awesome con-artist movie is "Nueve Reinas" (Nine Queens) (2000) - it's from Argentina (and obviously not in English) but a great film regardless.

Remade by Hollywood and called "Criminal" (2004) which I've not seen - but it gets a lower rating than the original.

    Secret life of walter mitty
    Blackfish

yeah secret life of walter mitty I thought was great

    Bad Boy Bubby

      rofl

Something for all ages, that one.

  • just watched the grand budapest hotel

  • +1

Watch "Battlefield Earth" starring John Travolta.

    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0185183/

The rating is there to deter you from watching it because it tells a story closely resembles the true origins of the human species, except it is set in the future instead of our past.

Watch "The Time Machine" starring Guy Pearce.

    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0268695

It explains why what happened in the past cannot be changed and that the actions you take in the present moment (Now) that can change the future.

Some of my fav movies :

    Saving Private Ryan
    Downfall
    1984
    Willy Wonka (70s version)

  • CBC's The Arrow (1997 TV Movie) link

"The true story of how Canada built and destroyed the world's most advanced fighter plane back in the 1950s."

  • +1

    Gone baby gone.

    Second Hand Lions

  • All time favourite movie:

    Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (2005)

it's a crime, comedy with Robert Downey Jr as the protagonist. It didn't get that big at the box office, but seriously funny if you like fast talking, witty comedies.

  • If you want to watch something that is thought provoking, frightening in the extreme, and just plain sad hunt down a film called, "Waiting for Superman."

  • +2

(disclaimer: sorry, it's late, my brain can't function properly, and I've had a dungheap of a time trying unsuccessfully to open an accursed MyGov account to do my e-tax [their motto should be: "If it ain't broke, BREAK IT!"] but I AM a movie fan so here goes…)

    • My all-time favourite is 'The Shawshank Redemption' (has gotten me out of some downer moments) but several people have already wisely suggested it…
      Ditto 'Infernal Affairs'.

    • 'The Corporation': not really a movie per se but IMHO, important viewing (I haven't seen 'Food Inc' yet but I gather it is equally as important)

    • 'Syriana': the times we live in…. (if that's a little too dry for you, 'The Siege'…I would never have thought as a youngster watching this at the cinema that the scenario could ever come so close to being)

    • 'Arlington Road': not a great movie by any stretch but a personal favourite of mine, with a nasty sting in its tail. Quite un-American in its denouement. I suppose you could call it the 'Carnival of Souls'/'The Sixth Sense' for conspiracy theorists. Recommended for tinfoil hat-wearers.

    • 'Gettysburg': don't believe I'm gonna dishonour the souls of the men long lost, but at 4hrs 31mins, I felt like I had undergone my own war sitting through this epic. Strangely enough, large chunks of the movie have faded from my memory (not the moustaches!) but I can remember and revel in every piece of music from this film.

    • Stephen Chow has already been mentioned but my pick is a (relatively) unknown piece of his, 'The King of Comedy': it is my choice of a(n absurdist) comedy with soul. The theme of gratitude runs through this movie.

    • As I get older, I find I no longer have the patience to enjoy movies as a whole, or to put it another way, instead of recommending movies, I just pick and choose scenes instead. Eg: the dialogue-less heist scene in 'Rififi'; the running gun battle in 'Heat'; the brutal cop-slaying in the playground in 'SPL', bested only by the intense knife v baton fight in the alleyway; the first 28 minutes of 'Saving Private Ryan'. A little less testosterone-laden: the heartfelt opening chapter of 'Up' made me well up, while the first half of 'Wall-E' was manna from heaven for this self-diagnosed Aspergers kid. Taken to the chronological extreme -> the introduction of the driver in 'Drive'; JUST the opening scene of the self-sacrificing Engineer in 'Prometheus' isn't EVEN enough to make me unsee the catastrophe of the whole movie; the opening credits of 'The Island of Dr Moreau' (1996) ONLY, I watched it so that you wouldn't have to! ^_^

    • Too bad your caveat would exclude two very good candidates of film-making in general (not to mention exemplary sequels): 'Terminator 2', & 'Aliens'. I'll still try to sneakily shoo-in 'The Thing' (1982), not so much a sci-fi film but a masterpiece IMHO of paranoia, and beastly "eeow!"-ey VFX.

    • For goofy laughs and slapstick schadenfreude, 'The Drunken Master', to witness the crazy lengths Jackie Chan was willing to go to, to entertain YOU.

    • Many many more but yawning uncontrollably now, so an unconventional pick - 'Sintel': short film, free. Not ashamed to say I bawled a bit.
      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eRsGyueVLvQ

2nd disclaimer: Apologies for the boofhead picks, I'm a guy.

Aahh.. the pictures, the movies, the cinema, the theatre, the fillum house, the silver screen - shy little nervy kids everywhere will always an escape and salvation in you…

  • +1

The usual suspects. American psycho. Fight Club. American History X.

  • +2

If you're looking for a feel good movie I'd highly recommend 'The Intouchables'. It's a French movie, but don't let that discourage you.

  • +1

Another little short visit to this thread:

    • Gremlins 2: another one in my 'Sequel > Original' file. Donald Trump rips, Rambo homages, Busby Berkeley numbers, etc. IMHO, a rollicking great grin of a film (watch out for the 'intermission' too - great reaction from the cinema audience every single time). I have watched this many many times. Joe Dante, please come back!

    • John Wick: currently in theatres. Please park your brain outside the cinema, this will be a popcorn-fest. Keanu Reeves, 'nuff said (I still can't think of 'Bram Stoker's Dracula' without a wry smile).

Made by a stuntman/action choreographer team, this is a guilty pleasure for me: Man gets car stolen by Russian thugs, they also kill his little beagle; man is not pleased; man seeks justice/revenge - many limbs are broken, many skulls and torsos receive metal-induced ventilation via double-tapsthe Mozambique Drill.

After many years of crappily-choreographed action footage/scenes (eg. the abysmal 'Quantam of Solace', king of shaky-cam Paul Greengrass, the Dark Knight trilogy), John Wick harkens back to the glory years of '80s biff and bang. Except that the hero in this is not indestructible, AND his guns need constant re-loading. Whoo! Central Axis Relock! I'm actually anti-gun in real life but darn it if movies like this and 1996 Hongky's 'Final Option' don't do a brainworm on me! Guess I'd better go check out Christian Bale's 'Equilibrium' as well. Final verdict: Solid solid action flick (I'm just trying to forget the final mano e mano fight scene)

  • Ghosts of the civil dead. - it's a Aussie movie about a max security prison in meltdown. Nick cave has a cameo!

    All about Eve.
The importance if being Ernest- the 1960s version
Black coal, thin ice - chinese cop mystery.
    District 9
    Withnail&I

  • My pick for a comedy that has a pretty clear message is Idiocracy http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0387808/?ref_=nv_sr_1

Wasn't a huge release but is pretty much a cult classic now, Whenever I visit a large shopping centre and see the bulk of humanity in action I keep asking myself if perhaps its more of a documentary!

  • Really you need to work out what you after.

    Something funny?

Something the critics define as good?

    Some mindless entertainment with explosions?

You say no sci fi but you might want expand on that.

When you say no sci fi - you mean nothing to do with science fiction at all or just something thats not jammed pack with sci fi lingo ala Star Trek.

Aliens for example. Brilliant action thriller flick that while set in space/another planet rarely use any "phaser phrases"

  • +2

Little miss sunshine is a nice breakaway if your sick of the usual Hollywood commercially driven crap

  • Some of my favourites, atmospheric and strange…

    The Night of the Hunter
    The Conversation
    Mulholland Drive
    Sunset Boulevard

  • +1

Seeing as its getting to that time of the year It’s a Wonderful Life should be on your list, yes its old and black and white but its still a great movie.
