Best Travel Insurance for Travelling to Japan and Korea? Best Way to Allocate Money? Cash? Citibank Card?

Hi all,

Was just wondering what's the best travel insurance to go with heading to Japan and Korea (2Dec2014 - Flying out from Japan 23rd arriving Sydney 24DEC2014)?

Also what's the best way to go about a Citibank International Card. I'm currently a student so hope I'd be eligible for one. Is it best to exchange all cash, or some cash and sign up for a Citibank Card? (Does it attract any usage fees there?) Or exchange cash now and am I able to deposit the Japanese Yen and Korean Won straight onto the card?

Thanks for your help in advance!

  • Just get a citibank plus transaction account and withdraw cash at Citibank ATMs over there.. Plenty of Citibank ATMs in Japan, dunno about Korea.

    • Japan has their own special banking network, so make sure you find a Maestro supported ATM (7/11 is everywhere and have them).

Korea most ATMs there will work and be fine.

  • I'm going to Japan and Korea too! It'll be my third trip to both. Previously I've just exchanged Yen here and Won in Korea and brought some AUD as backup. Never previously taken a card. I've exchanged both Yen and Won already because my friends said the rates may be bad at the end of the year but I do have a back up Citibank card as well this time.

    • Do you know if you can preload Yen and Won into the citibank card?
Agree, sort of tempted to exchange now while the AUD is doing fairly well against the other currencies.

  • +1

Was just wondering what's the best travel insurance

imo best policies are ouch, good2go, worldcare, covermore, insureandgo :)

  • Just stick with a citibank plus card - ATMS are easily found… 7/11s everywhere

    Japanese prefer to use cash

Japanese QE will mean that rates stay good - Unless your friends work in the investment banking industry or are successful forex traders I would completely ignore there advice

Have fun and make sure to learn a little japanese:)
