Risks when selling new mobile phone on eBay/Gumtree

Hi All,

I recently sold on eBay, a new mobile phone locked to Vodafine along with the tax invoice. I had originally purchased the phone from target and it is time to ship the phone. I remember filling a form when purchasing from target where they made a note of the IMEI/Control number in the ID verification form.

Are there any risks in selling the phone with the bundled SIM? Is it advisable to remove the bundled SIM and just ship the sealed phone. I know am being paranoid but am worred if the buyer uses the phone for anything illegal and it is traced back to me. I've taken a photo of the sealed box with the IMEI etc. This is the first time I'm selling a new mobile shipped to another state. For local sales, I always remove the bundled SIM and just sell the sealed mobile handset.

I look forward to your replies.

Thanks

Remove the SIM, unless your description said otherwise. Did the same with a phone I sold that came with a SIM.

  • sorry misunderstood.

if possible ask buyer to return the sim?

    • I have not posted the phone yet. I did state that the SIM was included in in the listing. I have now informed the buyer about not sending the SIM and awaiting their confirmation before shipping.

I think you misunderstood. Its a brand new sealed phone with a bundled SIM. However I had to fill ID verification form when buying the phone at target. The SIM is unused and not registered.

I was asking about the risks of posting the phone with an unused bundled SIM since target made a note of something in their form that I filled as part of the ID verification form.

I worked at Officeworks before and we had the same procedure (Australian Government's initiative) when selling SIM cards ie. recording the customer's details along with the sold SIM cards. So yes, your name is tied to the SIM card so you're better off not including the SIM card.

    • Thanks that really helps. Buyer has agreed for postage without SIM card.

Would you know what is the Control number field in the ID verification form? Are there risks of recording the IMEI of the phone when buying and on-selling to someone else?

  • I'll just vouch for not including the SIM (which you should never do anyway), and if you're still a bit weary you can keep a record of the phone sale if you want just to back yourself up. Should be fine though. SIM cards are only $2 usually anyway, so the buyer shouldn't really mind.

  • never understood the id verification thing with shops, though you can just walk into any phone provider and theyll just hand you however many you want. no questions asked

  • If selling in eBay, watch out for this scam…..where you receive a bonus email (which looks like its from paypal) saying the money has been paid.
So if sell using PayPal, much sure you login to confirm money is in the account

  • Thank you all. Glad I asked here. Buyer agreed to receive the phone without the SIM. Already posted. Hopefully everything goes okay.

  • Send it Express Post "Platinum" so you get a delivery signature.
