Will never fly with Tiger ever ever ever again, even if it's free.

Last month, trying to save some money for work, I booked return Syd-Melb. Flight leaving Syd was delayed 2hrs. I had to buy a Virgin ticket at the airport. Ok, so I think that must have been just bad luck.

Flight back to Syd was even worse - upon arrival at Tulla airport, the lines were so long to check in (Tiger don't offer online/express kiosk check-in even if you only have carry on bags). Whilst waiting (over 30mins), I heard an announcement on the PA system that check-in was now closed for the flight to Syd - a whole 40mins before flight time!! I went up to the desk and made enquiries and was rudely told that they had made 3x announcements previously asking that passengers to Sydney make their way to the front of the line.

    Nobody wanted to help me.

I swear on my life that those announcements were not made.

Guess what I had to do… yes.. walk up to Virgin terminal and buy another ticket home.

In trying to save $80 flying with Tiger, it ended up costing me an extra $300.

    • Yeah, the disadvantage with Tiger is that you need to arrive at the airport almost 1hr earlier than you would flying Virgin, Qantas or Jetstar. Sometimes it's worth it, sometimes it's not. Perhaps Tiger needs to be more upfront about their strict checkin procedures.

I think Tiger are pretty upfront with the checkin procedures:

        Clearly stated here: http://www.tigerairways.com/au/en/check_in.php

Also when you print your ticket there is a big image on the top of the page to the left that says "Lugguage check-in opens 2 hours prior to departure and closes 45 mins prior to departure without exception"

At Melbourne Airport when you line up there is another big sign that states check in closes 45 mins prior to departure without exception.

I think they have been very upfront about the check in times. Where this goes wrong for people is that they are used to travelling with Qantas/Virgin that do not have such strict check-in procedures and have assumed the same applies to Tiger.

My best mate rang me from Syd airport about a month ago saying that he is on a later flight because he missed the check in time for Jetstar by 5 mins (checkin is 30mins prior to departure for Jetstar). I asked him if he read the ticket or the T&C's and he sheepishly admitted to just assuming it was the same as Qantas/Virgin.

you are absolutely right. if people took the time to notice that check-in is 45mins prior to departure then we wouldn't have to listen to their complaining.

@BelLikesABarg: I am not saying all of that was not listed in their T&C's.

I was at Melb Airport @ the Tiger Terminal well before the close time for check-in expired.

When they made an announcement on the PA that check in for Syd had closed, it was not only myself, but also my work colleague and at least a dozen other passengers who missed the flight. The rude Tiger rep told us that announcements were made 3x for Syd passengers to step fwd - NONE of us heard those announcements.

It was a terribly busy day at the airport (it was one of the afternoons of the Melb windy weather), and the check in line for Tiger stretched to the entry door, and in their mass confusion and chaos they forgot to make the announcements.

            • @zeppeybabey: I never had problem at check-in time but I didn't have any good experienced with Tiger.

Wait till Tiger let you wait more than 2.5hrs at airport and arrive after midnight…you will see the pain in the (¯°¯)
Tiger never care for passengers safety!!!

Nice deal - Big fan of tiger, they've saved me heaps and have had pretty good service from them including being offered emergency exit seats without having to pay extra for it.

Now if they only started flying Melb - Singapore and really shake up the market :)
