My local Caltex Woolworths can not accept payment via Egift Card

I love my 5% discounted petrol and used to get physical gift cards delivered with $0 postage with my red energy rewards login but they charge postage for physical gift cards now so have to get egift cards now which works fine at my normal woolworth's but I just went to my local Woolworth's caltex store (Wenthworthville NSW) and was told that they can not accept e gift card as they system does not support egiftcards yet. They said other store might be able to do it but they can't it.

Now my question does any one here know a caltex woolworths store around sydney west that accepts egiftcard? I tried searching online but can't find any information but I am hopeful that my fellow ozbargainers will come to rescue as usual. Thanks

Go to Woolies supermarket and purchase a wish gift card with your e-gift card, then you can use it at the Co-Branded outlets, or at a Woolworths Caltex outlet. You're essentially transferring the balance to a physical medium as apposed to a paper medium. Just be nice to the Woolies person who serves you, they will understand.

    • That's a great idea. Will try it this weekend

It's a good idea in theory but when I worked a ww years back we were told not to allow gift card purchases with gift cards - you're transferring between mediums but you're also extending the expiry date.

Not to say it isn't worth a shot IMO it's not an unreasonable request at all, just be prepared that they may not let you do this

  • Hah, i had the exact problem tonight. The operators have no idea what to do with the eGift card, so I assume it's not valid for Woolies petrol, even though the PDF file shows the Woolworths Petrol logo at the bottom! Looks like I will be doing the same…

  • That sucks. Will try the gift card trick tonight

  • how is the egift card? What to you produce when making purchases, is there a number. Never bought one but curious to know

    • It has a in store number and pin number. At woolies self serve checkout machine you select payment option as e gift card and then it ask you for the 10 digit number and then for pin. You enter the details from keypad you normally use to scan the card and enter pin. I dont even take the print out of my pocket, just open the Pdf in my mobile

      • This is for self checkout. So how about to checkout chick or at the petrol station?

So the only different between a card and a egift is, the card you swipe and put pin whereas the egift is to provide the 10 digit number and enter pin.

  • Had a similar problem but with actual prepaid gift card !
These prepaid mastercard gift cards do not come with a PIN. So you have to press Credit and sign.
The di** head at Hungry Jacks Seven Hills would not accept that card saying "Oh no, its been now PIN only for a while now".
I asked him then why does the terminal still display the option of "Press enter or PIN" ?
He then went on about the bank refusing payment or such crap !

    • There is no longer an option to sign for ANY cards. It's PIN only. Been that way since around August, I think from memory. If you still have one of those cards I'd be contacting the provider, because you're likely to have that problem in a lot of places, if not all.

      • Thats not correct. Its pin only for cards with chips. For gift cards without chips you should be able to sign still

Girl in David jones children's told me that they accept signature always still, for my chipped Amex etc

      • Wrong, International bank cards which offer signature will always be accepted along with prepaid visa/mastercard giftcards.

Wentworthville NSW isn't on this list. But here's the list of locations where eGift Cards are accepted:

  • This is the reply I got after emailing EverydayGift cards asking how to use the voucher at Caltex/Woolies stores. The store I had always used with physical cards is no longer listed as a participating store. The FAQ page indicates that you can't swap an egift card for a gift cards:
Can the recipient convert their eGift Card to a Gift Card?
    No.

The Caltex Woolworths co-branded fuel outlets operate under an agreement between Caltex and Woolworths, as such not all sites are owned or operated by Woolworths, some sites are owned and managed by Caltex or independent franchisees.

Under Reserve Bank legislation, these independent franchisee operators have the right to make a decision on which cards they do or do not accept. Unfortunately we cannot force them to accept our E-Gift Cards

As stated in the terms and conditions, Woolworths Gift Cards are accepted at participating stores only, and these stores may change from time to time. Full details of participating stores can be found www.everydaygiftcards.com.au and can be located through the right hand menu under 'Learn More'

We do apologise for the inconvenience and hope that in the near future, we can have all Caltex Woolworths co-branded fuel outlets participating in our Gift Card programs.

You should be able to still use this card in our supermarkets without an issue.

    Kind Regards,
    Gift Card Team

    • Very dissapointing. The nearest three Caltex Woolworths from me are not listed as participating stores :(

    • As my previous post, you can still transfer the balance of your e-card, and move it to a physical card, in store through woolies. There is no extra charge for this, and of course, you can use it in the Caltex Woolworths Co-branded outlets.

      • Thanks Theone. Do you know if this is actually allowable by the system, or it is dependant on the checkout operator - like you cannot actually buy and pay for a giftcard using giftcard?

        • In the end Woolies has your money tied up in what ever accounts the money from these gift cards go to. Imagine all the gift cards people forget they have, what happens to that money? So what is the harm in transferring it from digital to physical?

You would of course have to ensure the person you deal with at the checkout understands your plight. The only systems I know of which restrict you are the self-servers.

I've had ww gift cards before and they all seem to have gone through ok at the Co-branded sites.

  • they all can its just that most are not trained to use it, i felt like jumping behind the counter and doing mine myself

To help everyone, just wanted to let you know I successfully bought a physical gift card using my eGift card as payment. This was at a woolies supermarket.

The cashier gave it a go even after the manager stood her ground believing it wasn't possible.

-Basically you grab a physical gift card
-when they ask for payment tell them eGift card method
-they select eGift card on their interface
-then you enter the details into the eftpos Pin Pad
-and finally the cashier tops up the gift card value (as all the gift cards are blank to start with)

The process is exactly like any other sale. Don't believe anyone when they say it can't be done (in a woolies supermarket)

    Goodluck!

Anyone working at Woolies have a training manual/console screenshots which I can print it and bring it along everytime I want to use eGift card? No one in Woolies seem to know anything about eGift card and it is a nightmare to convince them that no this is not a scam paper and yes your system supports this new payment method.
