Looking to buy a new Laptop

Hi Guys,

I think it's time to treat myseld to a new laptop..

I am really keen on making the switch to a mac but unsure which one to purchase.
I would also consider a Windows machine but also cannot decide on which one.. There was one on ozbargain a few days ago which was a steal, HP from harvey norman price dropped from ~$950 to ~$650.

something like an allrounder would be good for me, not really a gamer so no biggie.. Might do some development or design, unsure at this point.
Could i please have suggestions on which mac or windows machine i should purchase..

Thank you :)

  • Macbook Airs are the best all rounders for the money. Carved from solid metal, they are tough and light. Great keyboard and trackpad, great performance and battery life. Fine for light gaming. Screen is nothing special at all. Owners swear by them and they have great resale value.

If you want some tablet/pen action, owners are loving their Surface Pro 3s. Seems to be the hybrid people are most delighted with. Heard some rumors about poor gaming performance. Accessories expensive. Too early to determine resale value.

If you want the best combination of value for money/performance and quality, and don't care about style, weight or battery life, buy a secondhand or reconditioned Dell Latitude. They are built like tanks, and have great trackpads and keyboards. And being "business" laptops you can add RAM and replace the hard drive etc. Generally poor for gaming. Resale value is terrible for conventional Windows laptops - so you get a great bargain buying second hand.

    • I agree with this. I bought a Macbook air recently and love it. Plays most games on lower quality settings but I'd suggest the Macbook Pro over the air. When you game on the Air the fans get really loud. Battery life is amazing though.

You can get a lot better performance per buck from a standard PC laptop but you lose out on the warranty and the battery life.

  • The real issue with windows laptops is their notoriously short battery life.
Haswell cores have brought in some competition to the MBA's.

From experience, I would recommend either the Lenovo T440 or the Toshiba z30/40 if you want windows.I'd say theyre almost the same as the MBA. Both can be used for light gaming, and have battery life comparable to the MBA, and at a similar price tag.
