Europe trip for ~$900 return

So, I'm thinking of pulling the trigger on this trip to England in Easter. Basically just a short one, seeing family and spending a weekend in Ireland.
Flight out of Perth:

Flight from Singapore to London, and return flight from Dublin to Perth.
http://www.kayak.com.au/flights/SIN-LON/2015-03-30/DUB-PER/2…
Internal flight from Manchester to Dublin
http://www.kayak.com.au/flights/MAN-DUB/2015-04-10

Total comes to ~$828, plus baggage charges on the cheap airlines.
Can anyone see any holes in this itinerary? Obviously I want to leave enough time in Singapore to compensate for any delays on the flight out of Perth + getting through customs etc.

The cheapest direct, return flights (PER - LHR, LHR - PER) usually come out at around $1400 - $1600. So I though by doing it this way I'd be giving myself some extra spending money :P

Cheers!

No, I think you can do it cheaper...

I'd rather pay more and not worry about changing planes at Singapore

  • My friend paid $2700 return to europe with a good airline so $1000 is amazeballs

  • No issues. You are always better off flying out of Ireland when leaving Europe. Ireland doesn't have as high departure tax so the savings are great.

I am from the US and used to live in London. Every time I flew home I would go from Dublin as the savings was usually very high. Sometimes enough to pay for a long weekend in Ireland.

Lol I did a very similar trip a year ago: Scoot to Singapore, then full service carrier to Europe. Saved me a lot of money!

The risky bit is the transfer between carriers in Singapore. I left about ~six hours between just to be safe. Worked out fine. Very long trip though… don't know if I could do that again.

    • Hey, thanks for the reply.
How'd you find the double-stopover on the way across (Singapore and Abu Dhabi/Dubai)? I'm thinking of booking a hotel for a night in Singapore to break it up a bit.

      • On the Singapore stopover I sat in Changi for a few hours and soaked up the free Wifi. It was ok on the way over, but on the return trip I felt jetlagged after a long flight and just wanted to get home. The Europe stopovers was much briefer.

With the amount of money you save it would totally be worth booking a night. You could totally visit the town! That's what I'd do the next time around.

        • Good idea! I went outside the airport in Singapore once before on my way through, for a couple of hours. It was amazing. On the way home though you'll note there's just the one stopover in Abu Dhabi, then direct on to Perth.

        • @Rastafarian: terminal 2 has the best Indian (vegetarian) restaurant. had dinner there friday night. awesome.

Price match the Scoot flight with Jetstar 10% off, they have two flights a day which may be better for connection and no credit fee.

    • Hey thanks - good idea, I will do just that!

If you only have a few hours for stopover in SIN you can also pack your bathers (swimmers) in your hand luggage and enjoy a swim inside Singapore airport. Enter and pay near reception for the hotel there. costs about US15, I also took my own toiletries but towel and locker provided from memory. ou get a drink which was only a small tetra pack of weak fruit juice. I enjoyed just watching the stars and lazing in pool.

    • Yep, I've done that before. It's good to sit up and have a few jugs at the bar too. Last time I went there there was hardly any people there. I think I'll just book a hotel though, I'll have most of Monday in Singapore to kill.

  • As a matter of fact OP, I'm tempted to book these flights for myself.

  • Try ringing STA travel to shave of another $50

  • You arrive midnight in Singapore and leave 8.20 pm next evening. Then arr Dubai at midnight for another 8 hour layover, if I've read it right.
    I'd probably:
    1. Hotel in Singapore with sleeping tablet to ensure good rest.
    2. Try and hack it at airport in Dubai. I think you get a free meal there if you layover is over a certain time length. Google it.

Keep your wits about you. Flights and gates change. I was held up in Dubai for an hour or so and had to run like hell in Frankfurt to make a connection, while not even sure I was running in the right direction. You have allowed plenty of time for connections so that won't be a problem.
Don't wear anything Rasta at Airports. Will attract attention you do not want. :)

    Hey Rastafarian!

Heres hoping you got the idea for this particular itenary from my deal XD.

I can offer one improvement however, Due to Scoot having some very awkward flight times to Singapore (Hotel costs!), I would recommend doing a Jetstar price beat to shave another 10% off of the total & get on the JQ 134 flights that leaves in the morning, this would give you plenty of time to mess around in Singapore (about 7 hours) - more than enough to trip it in to the city for a look around.

One other thing, if looking to shave another $50 off, wait until Tuesday morning for Scoots Tuesday sales, they mark flights in your date range down to only $129, which after matching with jetstar is under $120.

Hope my advice is of some use! Cheers.

  • There are sometimes great deals, but if you see them, grab them VERY fast.

Around 5 years ago I think it was, Thomson, a big UK outfit, had some charter flights into Perth (a international charter is basically some seasonal flights, that only operate for a short period).

They were designed for UK tourists to come here over DEC-JAN period when airfares at highest.

Anyway, the last flight back to UK around end of JAN(end of OZ school hols) I think it was, they decided to dump the last 20 or so seats for $199 one way including a checked bag & meals.

Yes $199. Catch way if not from PER you had to get there.

There were no Qantas ff seats to PER from east coast & no cheap fares. Checked at time & cheapest fare BNE/PER was something like $490 one way.

Thing was with only 20 or so seats, it doesn't warrant paid advertising. If they gave it to the media as a public interest story, their phones/email would have been swamped, so they only let some travel agencies know 7 they sold out quickly.

Another case, during 1st gulf war.

United had lots of empty seats to USA & beyond.

So at the time, they had a $1200 fare to anywhere in USA return & still they weren't selling enough (it was for Feb low season travel), so they then included FREE extra flights to anywhere in Europe they flew to.

So we went, we flew SYD/AKL/HNL/LAX/DEN/NYC/FRA & back & earned heaps of ff miles (which we then used on Ansett when we got back) & were also able to have 2 stopovers in each direction.

Yes it was a milk run, but at time had no money & didn't care about route, only the cost.

Even asked very very nicely for upgrades at check in & was dressed well & got upgraded to business class on one sector from Europe back to USA(at no cost) & also went skiing in Colorado.

Think getting upgraded like this is now harder, but if you ask nicely, they can only say no.

    NOTE ON UPGRADES
Many airlines will eg. take 400 economy bookings for an aircraft that seats 390 in total, say 340 economy & 50 business class.

They work off on average of no shows, here say 10 people (probably mostly business types flying on full fares who can change or not show up & still can fly later at no cost).

Then, they would need to upgrade up to 50 people, but rather than do it free, they will have signs at check in saying upgrade for so many $$$$ or points/miles. Smarter last minute revenue gain opportunity.

That is an amazing setup especially with the Kayak multi-city search! OP would you mind explaining the searching process you went through to get to this final combination of flights?
