Bike Rack Recommendations

I'm looking into options for bike racks. I've only used a tow bar mounted rack before, which I see as the most secure way of transporting a bike, but my current car does not have a tow bar.

Options are:
- put bike in boot (Not feasible as there's an lpg tank taking up half the boot space.)
- install a tow bar and get a tow bar mounted rack
- install roof mounts
- use a rear boot mounted bike rack, eg http://www.reidcycles.com.au/pacific-3-bike-multi-fit-car-ra…

The rear boot mount option looks to be the cheapest but i'm worried about how secure they are. Does anyone have any experience with these? I've looked into roof mounts put that seems really pricey and you have to buy specific fittings for your car model.

Any advice or opinions are appreciated.

  • I was really put off by the initial price of roof racks. But after I've see friends melt carbon wheels from the heat of their exhaust or been rear ended, I decided to go with the roof racks and haven't looked back. It's great, not to mention literally seconds to pop on and off from the roof. I'm using Thule roof racks with their bike carrier. All up around $500 but very happy with it. Have heard stories of people forgetting they have a bike on the roof and drive into their garage, but I have on street parking and a sunroof so no chance of anything dumb like that. :)

  • I would recommend; "install a tow bar and get a tow bar mounted rack" +1

Out of all the options I think this would be the most convenient. re; Mount/dismount the bike.
