Public Trustee Adelaide - Your Experiences?

My elderly father had his will drawn up for free by the Public Trustee Adelaide many years ago, but having heard some horror stories, is looking for information to help him decide whether it's in his best interests to to draw up a new will elsewhere, or to change the documents to remove the PT as executor, and nominate a trusted relative or friend as executor. Or leave it as it is. It's a big decision for him.

I'm hoping to collect some reports from people who have had recent experience dealing with the Public Trustee Adelaide to assist him. Researching the internet, I found a lot of negative reviews from people who wouldn't wish the PT on their worst enemy, could not find any positive recommendations. However, many of the horror stories are dated before 2010. My own negative experience with PT was also before 2010. It is possible they have improved their services since then.

Any more recent personal experiences with The Public Trustee Adelaide would be much appreciated, as well as general experience in the area of wills, or where he can go for advice that won't be too expensive.

Does anyone know whether PT will charge my father for drawing up the original will if he revokes the will they made for him? I understand that they only provide a will free of charge if they are made the Executor. What happens if he wants to change the will to make a relative the executor, or revoke that old will and make a new one elsewhere? Anyone know how much it's likely to cost?

Thanks.

  • I personally wasn't involved with dealing with them, but when my grandma passed away earlier this year my Mum had to work with them and there was no major problems. I think there was a couple of problems with paperwork not being sent when they said it would be and stuff like that but only minor issues. Having said this my Mum still ended up doing most of the work and the PT just filed the paperwork etc. I think they were helpful to provide guidance as to what is needed to be done, but if you know what to do anyway, you probably don't need them.

  • Thanks for posting this info Heizenberg. Anyone else had experiences with SA Public Trustee?
