What Is The Best Place to Sell Second Hand Car?

Hi All,

My car is about 6 years old and i'm thinking of selling it and upgrading to a new car either by end of this year or early next year. I have considered posting it up on carsales.com.au (which charges $60 to put up the ad) but was wanting to know if there are other ways of selling it privately that I haven't yet considered.

And with regards to purchasing a new car - what do you consider the best time to buy?

  • Gumtree.

Depends on the car doesn't it? I.e. convertibles cost more in summer than winter. I also reckon it's a matter of finding the right car and person to haggle with than timing.

    • The car is Subaru Liberty Heritage 2008, 83k km
      It's a luxury sedan

      • Waste of time putting this on Gumtree. I'd say you would be looking to get about $10,000. Gumtree is for bargain hunters looking for CHEAP cars. Put it on carsales and carsguide (FREE). Try Gumtree but your luxury car is well out of that league.

  • Here is answer for selling your car: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/163817
On side note: searching in forum before posting does not hurt and not forbidden.

    • Thanks for the link. I also wanted to know if there are other options aside from Gumtree and carsales.com.au.

      • Local rag paid advertisement, a lot of people still do not use the internet.
Stick it on the side of the road?
Online Trading Post… but I think that is a dying source these days.

        What are you selling?

You know you will get a ton of tyre kickers and scammers?

Park it somewhere (legally) with high visibility and traffic and throw a massive sign on it. Apart from that you need to use online sites like Gumtree or Carsales.

do not leave it in your yard with a for sale sign in the window. This attracts window shoppers who knock on your door to ask the most stupidest time wasting questions anyitme of the day

    • FROM MUCH EXPERIENCE: One needs to be located in the right suburbs of a major city for Gumtree to work well. One where Travellers and temporary residents abide as this group is a major user of gumtree. Its also a bargain hunters den so people are mostly looking for cheap cars - under $3,000. Its free anyway so worth a try. I have had success selling a car through gumtree as well.

  • Off topic I know but… why don't you want to trade it in? Cash sales don't bring much of a better deal these days.
Unless you are lucky you will only get about wholesale value for it with a private sale unless someone falls in love with it because of the colour / shape / jazzy wheels etc..

"And with regards to purchasing a new car - what do you consider the best time to buy?"
Question been asked a 1000 times… answer, any day of the year. Depends on the car make model.
Do a ""search"" here for others that have asked your question frequently…

To achieve the best deal overall the key is you and being armed with knowledge thorough research. :-)

Don't forget to look at ongoing costs for some cars… some charge $500+ for an oil change!! (they call it a service lol)

  • Gumtree.

Same price/ad blurb/photos but more calls from Gumtree than Carsales. More timewasters off Carsales too which is unexpected.

  • cool

  • I have sold a few cars on carsales and can highly recommend

    FROM A CAR SELLING EXPERT:

    Carsguide is FREE:
    http://www.carsguide.com.au/

    Gumtree is FREE:
    http://www.gumtree.com.au/

It takes a day or so for the advert to go live on Carsguide.
By that time I had already sold my (dirt cheap) car through Gumtree.
Gumtree works well with CHEAP "BARGAIN PRICED" cars only, under say $3,000.
If your car is worth more than $4,000 dont expect miracles from Gumtree.
