Always change the money in the country you are going, that an advise any traveller will give you.
Less charges or not, depending of the place you change the money and the country you are.
I did it once to Travellex Express and got f***** and from now on always change in the destination country.

    • No no no.

Always change currency where you live, at a bank. Who wants to be running around wasting time in another country, when you don't know the fees etc.

Often your own bank will have reduced fees if you are a customer.

That said, not a good idea to travel anywhere with lots of cash.

What's wrong with credit or debit cards ? (both maybe best)

A Visa or MasterCard debit card is accepted anywhere a Visa or MasterCard credit card is. The merchant pays fees as if a credit card, but lot easier & safer than paying cash.

Ok lots of street markets don't take anything but cash, so have some cash, but not $1000's of dollars worth.

  • or change in bangkok (or any other asian country with low margins) if you happen to stopover

  • Ok Thanks for the advice :)

  • Change in UK. Go to martins money saving tips website (http://travelmoney.moneysavingexpert.com/) to compare which FX place is giving the best rate. some places you need to print things out which is a pain though.

  • Great advice from roiboi123 - it's usually correct advice to change money in the country you are going, to however I would recccomend changing money in the UK for other counties. There are loads of money changers and the rates are very competitive. Mse is a very good resource.

  • The best FX places in London are Covent Gardens FX http://www.coventgardenfx.com/ & Thomas Exchange Global (who have many FX shops in Central London). https://www.thomasexchangeglobal.co.uk/

In Sydney try Currency Exchange Intl on George Street. You can try to get them to match the rates of the previous day, which are published on the London web-sites of the above two firms!

I spend over 6 weeks of the year in London, so have done considerable research on this!
