Need to Find a New Plan or Pre-Paid

A lot of discussion on here about mobile plans etc. Makes my head spin.

Long story short:
1. Am with Optus on $50/month plan. It expired last July.
2. Have Optus HTC One phone and not planning to upgrade it yet. No problems and meets my needs.
3. Have 1gb data at the moment, but I never use much of it, so I am probably overpaying with Optus.
4. Not always been happy with Optus coverage, specially in Melb CBD.
5. Want to keep my number.

So I am looking for something cheaper. Maybe 500mb of data will do me. Don't make lots of calls. Use Whatsapp from time to time, mostly at home on my wifi. Send a few sms from time to time, but not a heavy user.

As Aldi is on Telstra network, I wonder if they would do. Are people here on Aldi happy with the service?

Much as I hate Telstra, the network is the major drawcard, but their prices are just off the planet.

If I go away from Optus, does that mean I no longer get Android updates for my phone?

So, any ideas, suggestions, comments etc.

  • Telstra freedom prepaid.
$30 recharge will get you $250 credit and 400mb data usually but there is currently a bonus double data offer until April 2015 meaning you'll get 800mb too.

Plus you can use your recharge credit to buy more data packs if needed.

Thought that was the only prepaid plan where you had to get your wallet out again if you want more data.?

      (going by Whirlpool https://whirlpool.net.au/wiki/telstraprepaid )

also that plan is only 28 days.

      • My bad, stayed on prepaid encore and didn't realise that part had changed.

        Discard what I said above.

    • I recently moved over to this, I am happy with them except for the lack of 4g. But I would still recommend amaysim.

  • Well you could save 10 dollars a month by swapping to Boost

Pretty sure somewhere has $20 ie: half price sims atm.

But how is this a bargain?
Sure, you pay $40 BUT you get LESS data and for $5 extra you get double the data with Amaysim.

  • You'll get updates fine.
As for prepaid plans, have a look at the ones often mentioned on OZB: Vaya, Jeenee, Yatango etc… these are optus based but they are a lot cheaper than what you are paying right now.
