Recommendation for Tasmania trip?

My friends and I would like to go to Tasmania for a week for end of October, and would recommendations for tour package/ free and easy package. We were wondering if it is possible for us to arrange for hiking, fishing and maybe farm stays while we are there, if so, what are the cost like?

We will be departing from Melbourne and also, would like to know what type of accomodations do they offer there?

Thanks in advance for any recommendation =D

  • Where are you planning on going to while in Tas and have you been before?

  • We had never been to Tas before, was hoping to go for a round trip to relax and have some fun. (After exam break =P) I only have impression of Tas as from Television programmes. (That is the good hiking and fishing trips). Other than that, we don't really have a set destination when we're there. By the way, we are going as a group of 6. One of my friends suggested taking the spirit of Tasmania, but i have no clue where to take it or how much it would cost =P. Anyhow, suggestions of experienced travellers would be appreaciated =D

  • The Spirit is sometimes a good option depending on whether or not they have a sale on. It can be quite expensive but if you need to take the car you could always have one person go on the Spirit and the rest fly as airfares are usually much cheaper. There are the obvious things to do such as Cradle Mountain, the West and East coasts, the Stanley Nut and Hobart and also the Tamar Valley with lots of nice wineries and Lake Barrington if you like water skiing. I personally think the North West Coast is a bit boring but growing up there will do that to you! I have pasted a few links that may be helpful and I think as far as accommodation goes you are probably best just to try the usual online places like wotif etc.

  • Thanks for the information.

May I ask if you know of any good fishing spots over there? And if we can join day trips in Tas itself, rather then booking a tour package here in Melbourne?

  • I don't know a lot of fishing spots in Tassie this may help http://www.tasfish.com/

Redline may have some tour information http://www.redlinecoaches.com.au/

The travel centre links that I pasted should be able to give you lots of tour info, being from Tas I don't really know alot about tours as it was not something we ever did. The only other thing is that the hotel concierge would have all tour info and also when you get to the airport or boat terminal there should be lots of brochures there with that kind of info.

Good luck, hope you have a great time, let me know if you want any more information, things have changed a lot since I moved to Melbourne a few years ago but we go down a few times a year to see the family. Oh there is one other thing, if you make it to the West Coast you should go on a cruise of the Franklin River it is really beautiful and Strahan is a lovely town, very touristy but laid back and relaxed as well.

  • Just one more question, do you have any idea if any place in Tas offer farm stays experiences and where I could contact and make arrangement with them?

  • Sorry I don't know of any, this link may be of some help.

  • I used this hot docket when I went to hobart a few weeks ago and the cruise was fantastic!! The docket gives you two for the price of one and teh cruise includes a beautiful lunch. http://www.hotdockets.com.au/view_coupon.asp?id=197269

Friends of mine have purchased a See Tasmania card on their trip and said it was well worth it. I think it is only worth it if you are travelling around Tasmanaia and not just staying in one place. However, look at the attractions and see if it is worth it for you. http://www.seetasmaniacard.com/

If you are going on the spirit of tasmanaia they have a lovely tourist information service. My aunty works there. :) They know all the good tours and the ones that are good value for money.

For accomodation in Melbourne, I hear a lot of people stopping in Melbourne before going on the Spirit stay at the Werribee South Caravan Park. I haven't been there my self but my friends manage it and they are two of the nicest people you will ever meet. They have some new cabins. http://www.totaltravel.com.au/travel/vic/melbournearea/weste….

Have a great time. I love Tassie.

  • Thank you for the information, this really seems great, now I just need to show my friends these as well =D
