Revised New Camera Rig

Hi,

After my first thread a few weeks ago (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/165537) and thanks to the help of the good people of the OB community, I've been steered to what I beleive is the right camera rig for me.

I want to get the highest quality possible shots I can as I like to print big.

After further research, including considering the Sony a7 range, I've narrowed it down to either a grey Nikon d610 ($1445) or d750 ($1975). Planning to buy from DWI as their rep is good and so much cheaper than local. Their warranty process is simple - buyer pays to send to Sydney. As long as the fault is not caused by buyer, they fix and return to you. I was very tempted by mirrorless - amazing quality and features - as we're travelling later in 2015, however the poor battery power and lack of native lenses were too big to overlook. Upon closer inspection, it is clear Nikon is currently superior to Canon in terms of body's - Canon must be planning to relase something soon though!

So, I'm a little stuck between the two Nikon's - the main differences of d750 are better autofocus, tilty screen, superior video (60fps vs 30fps for example), better image processor, increased natural and boosted iso range (however, I'm unsure how the natural iso range converts into real world use - will be good when dpreview do their full review), slightly better battery life, slightly lighter, slightly smaller and built out of better material. I think that's everything.

As for lenses, the resounding suggestion was invest in good glass and it will stay with you for life. After consiration, I couldn't agree more. So, I've decided on the following. My plan is to buy grey from DWI - Nikon 50mm f1.8. I compared this to the 1.4 and the price and difference the 1.8 came out on top. I'll then buy local at Digidirect for a Tamron 24-70mm f2.8 ($1022) which will be my main lens and scored very well on Dxo review of lenses based on the d610. I also have my eye on the Nikon 20mm 1.8 but not sure how it performs on the d610 as Dxo have not reveiwed it. I would like one nice prime wide for landscapes eventually with close focusing. However for travel, just the tamron and 50mm would leave home.

Beyond that, I'll wait until later in 2015 to decide what my next lens will be. It might be a nice macro or extension tubes - or a 80-200 f2.8 if I really miss having a telefocal. I'll also buy accessories as required.

As for the camera choice, I'm leaning towards the d610 as I may not end up getting a telefocal (i.e. Improved autofocus) and rarely shoot video and when I do it's not serious. The d610 would leave me more cash for lenses also. I did see one go second hand for 1300 on eBay yesterday, so still better to go grey I beleive and get warranty (even if it's not a manufacturers one).

If you have any thoughts about my revised rig or where I plan to purchase from (positive/negative experiences with them) please comment! Also, if you think buying now or waiting might be good. It seeks DWI might be good to buy asap due to falling Aussie dollar.

Cheers

The Poll needs to be more specific..
    Volume-wise - yes
As a Pro choice - no.

    • ^^ I agree, I have found myself using mirrorless more often but keeping a DSLR or two handy when I get asked to shoot an event/job

      • Fair enough, I meant for pro and consumer both, so I'll update.

  • No. Mirrorless just isn't good enough yet. Compact size and less weight are great though.

DSLR now have movies so they've closed the gap on that part at least.

    • Yeah I agree. But I bet in 5 years they will be amazing!
