MP3 Player That Uses AA or AAA Batteries?

I'm looking for an MP3 player with screen that can play folders of music and lasts for at least 50 songs? Using Eneloops. I don't want to spend much maybe $20 max but prefer $10 if possible. Only need it to put in pocket when working and hook up to car for travel.

I have been buying these cheap chinese MP3 players for years. They have 2 problems, first the built in battery is weak and after a couple of months will only play a handful of songs before recharge. They also have menus that seem to not work properly or I can't work them out. I can have 50 songs on it but for some reason it always repeats the first 10 or so songs? Dunno must be doing something wrong have tried all the "repeat" settings. Likely an ID10T error but I can't work it out :P

Much appreciate any suggestions!

Try one of these options, they use a single AAA battery.

Also as a tip, if you have an outdated Android smartphone buy yourself PowerAMP from Google Play and make it a dedicated music player, it's definitely easier to scroll through large lists of songs with a touch screen (though battery life and portability won't be as good as an actual Mp3 player).

    • Cheers scrim, was looking at those but couldn't find any reviews and not sure about the menu/functions. Would it play just a folder at a time? Anyone had experience with these? how long does the AAA last? Don't have any smart phones that are not in use but if a really really cheap one came up (sub $30) i'd likely grab that.

Doesn't even need to be a smartphone. Plenty of old Nokia's can play music nicely and have insane battery life even with Network on by today's standards.
Ask your mates or their kids (if you're old enough that your mates have kids).
There's bound to be an old smartphone lying in a drawer somewhere amongst friends/family.

Put it in Aeroplane mode and the battery lasts for weeks (in standby) in my experience.

I bought a couple of these players. They had terrible build quality and the buttons stopped working pretty quickly.
EDIT: and they also played the songs in order, or in "random" but the random was always the same, from memory.

  • Thanks guys food for thought. Any recommendations on the earlier Nokia models that supported mp3? I don't know anyone that would have one laying around, everyone has updated. I have an old 3310 but alas no mp3 on that. Could pick up a cheapy on eBay just don't know what model to look for.

You'll find most S40/S60 phones have no problem playing MP3. Look out for those old N95 or E71 phones — they were popular in their days so should be plenty of samples around.

      • Most phones (not just Nokias) from the mid 2000's onwards can play mp3/wma.
Sony even had Walkman branded phones!

If you buy the E71 you will need to have a 2.5mm adapter, it doesn't have native 3.5mm audio jack.

  • Thanks much appreciate the help :)
