Must Buy Things in Japan?

So i'm traveling to japan soon and was wondering if there are any MUST buy things while im there.

Just some info that might help. Im thinking about purchasing a PS Vita / PS4 soon. Are games/consoles cheap/compatible over there?

Been meaning to buy some USB HDDs, Flash drives etc. Are these cheap?

Anything else?

Eneloops that are made from Japan.

      Eneloop Pro are cheap.

Get a amazon jp account and get free 1 month prime then order everything from amazon to your hotel.

Amazon is often cheaper than the stores there. Amazon prime will give you free same day shipping if ordered before 9am or next day for after 9am.

It will save you heaps of time shopping and can enjoy more time sight seeing.

Just make sure you order from amazon and has the prime logo.

definitely get the Zojirushi tuff mugg thermos…you can't get them here!

The PS Vita if you purchase will also be a little different since it'll be a Japanese Model. Therefore the ORIGINAL X = JAPANESE O. I think you can change it somehow though…

mevius ..mild 7's. charcoal filters please

  • I would recommend visiting second hand shops like BookOff and Geo. They have cheap electronics (ps4 for about 32000yen) and mobile phones. Phones from Docomo can be unlocked from Docomo. Some AU KDDI phones can be unlocked by buying a code online. I grabbed an LGL22 (Japanese lg g2) for about 15000. Bargain.

Pineapple on a stick across from Shinjuku station, ¥100 each which isn't great value but it's the best you'll eat.

    • Concur. I've been there on three separate trips and i can't get enough.

If your game enough, why not try bukkake

    • +2

I feel sorry for you dude. You meant well, but I think you may have got negged by some sick people who only know one meaning of the word. There are various meanings for Bukkake, but I believe you meant it as a cold noodle meal where they drop toppings on top. Personally, I like it.

I believe he meant it as a joke/play on words but 7 out of 8 voters so far didn't find it funny.

Buy a creampan (custard bun) and seben ireben for me

  • There's a huge amount if variety in the Japanese bakeries. Everything from Kare pan to yakisoba filled rolls. I think they started selling rice bread. As in bread with no wheat or gluten because it's made of rice. :) just food in general, if you're into anime.and stuff grab it there as it's cheaper. Visit the pokemon centre, things like stationary or studio ghibli stuff is cheaper there too :)

Anime merchandise is cheaper in Japan, but not blu-rays and DVDs. Incredibly expensive. Not unusual to pay $30 for ONE new episode. The upside is second hand discs are in pristine condition as there's a thriving market for them to recover some of the purchase cost.

      • I don't know about DVDs and Blu-Rays, but here in Perth, finally find an anime I've been looking for for ages. One episode was $70… nope.

    Capsule toys.

    • They're called Gacha aren't they?

Buy a Japanese textbook. They'll tell you all about the glorious deeds of their nation in the 20th century.

  • Green Tea Kit Kat

  • -Shiroi koibito- Japanese locals very very secretive about this item
-Royce chocolate- the one's which last for 4hours when not refrigerated.
-Nara mochi - this person has a documentary about his mochi making techniques. Worth the experience.
    -Gundams.

    • If you're talking about Shiroi koibito (白い恋人) the biscuit, there's nothing secretive about them. It's just two butter biscuits/wafers with white chocolate pressed in between. I used to purchase these as presents all the time when visiting friends in Sapporo.

I have to admit they do taste awesome, but hard to find outside Hokkaido where they originate. So unless the Op is going there, you might send him on a wild goose chase!

Steel cap shoes for work…cheap, durable and super comfortable. Word about these travelled fast at my work so it's the most requested/ordered item from any staff member who plans to visit Japan.

Buy iPhone or any phone cases at Yodobashi, they are cheap and high quality. Make sure to find things with "Made In Japan" label.

  • Tiger rice cooker (or Zojirushi). a 230v export model.

  • ebay is good.

  • JVC HA-S500

I'm not a headphone expert but i got these from my last trip to Japan in December as advised by another OzB thread. Got them for around 30 dollars and they sound great

  • Import a car! Cheap and great investment :p

    • +1

Sadly it will have to be a old car, i don't think you can import a new car anymore without a massive tax put on it.

  • 3d printed mini figurine of yourself!

    • WHERE?!?!?

    • they're not cheap though :/ but super cool

  • Green tea Oreos, and as other noted green tea kit kat too.

  • Definitely check out the second hand stuff, Japanese put very low value on second hand items so they are usually in excellent condition because they take care of things and are cheap because of this as well.

I remember seeing used PS4 consoles in more obscure stores in Akihabara for around $250 Australian and they were still in great condition, just no box.

  • Tokyo Banana!!

    Secondhand cameras.
Softmap have lots of stores around and they sell lots of used cameras for half the RRP price.
They grade the quality of cameras and they are pretty honest.

  • unfortunately you can't bring it in to Australia but Japanese bratwurst made by Homokatsu company. and then unfortunately labelled as "Homo Sausage".

  • a sumo wrestler!

buy used undies formerly owned by cute girls!

    • Strangely perhaps, but there is a vending machine for that.

  • suntory whisky from a vending machine… just because you can!

  • 8K TV….

  • Just a note - vegetarians, you wont have much luck there. Only food I brought back was honey mixed with maple syrup. I also bought an obento box. Not very cheap, but very high quality. Can use it for years and years going to work. Second thing- if you have bigger build dont plan on buying any clothes or shoes! That means anything above 180cm and 80 kilos.

There are some practical things you might find useful to buy, mostly in above mentioned 110 yen shops.

    • I bought plenty of shoes cheap at ABC Mart…. and im size 11 US
