Has Anyone Received The Android 5.0 Lollpop OTA for Their Nexus Devices?

Lollipop has released and the OTA rollout has started for eligible Nexus devices. With that said, who here's already got it via OTA (and not by manual means)?

  • I got it a couple of days ago on Nexus 5. Just appeared as a notification that a system update was available. Around 500MB download. Not sure if I'm a fan just yet but it might grow on me.

    • Lucky you, I've been waiting and half expecting it for weeks now, kinda like the Nexus 6!

Haven't got the OTA. Not too eager to get it. The material design is like the iOS 7 flat design (which I am not a big fan). Some of the apps I use a lot (e.g. MXPlayer) do not appear to support Android 5.0 yet. I know they will, but from past experience, could take a couple of weeks.

Material Design is nothing like iOS 7. Instead of dull, translucent glass-like panes reminiscent of Windows Vista, Material Design has solid, bright and colourful elements which logically overlap and create a sense of depth (according to Google). In my opinion, the animations are a bit over-done, but overall Lollipop is a huge improvement over KitKat in terms of functionality and usability (with the exception of the stupid head-up display notifications), and much more advanced than iOS.

      • My first impression was that it looks like Windows phone.

  • I'm waiting for it for my Moto G. You guys should get it before me so I think I'll have at least a few more weeks to wait.

I heard there was a slight delay with the roll out because of a battery drain issue they had to address.

  • I got my hands on the 5.0 preview version before so this time I'm not able to get an ota. I did the update manually without erasing my user data so it was less inconvenient.

  • For those in a hurry, all the official Nexus ROMs [and instructions for side-loading] are available here:
    https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images

THe Nexus 7 device ROMS [both] appear to be for the Wi-Fi version only atm - I suspect that for the 3/4G models, it may be a little like the Samsung Nexus, where the radios need testing by each ISP to confirm with the national standards where they are based.

Note these are official Google ROMS, however a sideload, while not affecting future updates like a third party ROM would, will have the same affect as a reset to factory settings, so sync/back-up any data you want saving…

  • Got it over the weekend on my (original) Nexus 7.
Been wreaking havoc with some of the apps though - major things like Gmail and FB were crashing out… :(
Seems to be a bit better today though.

I've been eagerly awaiting the update on my Nexus 7 (2013). Would rather not deal with sideloading and ADB and whatnot, so I'll continue waiting for OTA…

As for all the people complaining about change, I personally aren't worried at all. I use my tablet for mostly trivial operations. Internet, e-mail, GPS and 4chan. Some design change ain't gonna destroy my mission critical workflow to the point I send angry letters to Google.

Still, as I basically use this tablet as a toy, I am excited for new swooshy bells and whistles!

    • Yeah i manually flashed the image on my N7 (2013) over the weekend. Same as you, don't use my tablet all that much, mostly surfing the web, youtube and emails. Lollipop is pretty nice for a change, that's it.

  • My Nexus 4 got Lollipop OTA this morning.

  • nothing yet on my n4 and n7 (2013)

    • just saw mine today on my n4 :D going to install it after work, cos I heard it could take a while.. Thought n7 would get it first

n7 got it this morning, it downloaded 5.0.1 instead of just 5.0

Same, weird… Although I'm still happy!

  • Woke up to the OTA this morning! First impressions are that I like it but yet to get into it and really find out what it is like.
Keyboard is a bit of a shock, gone from dark to bright!

PS. Can't seem to change my poll vote on my phone.

keyboard theme can be changed, theres a 'Material Dark' to match the material light you default to in 5.0, as well as older holo themes.
settings > language and input > google keyboard > appearance and layouts > theme

Thanks! Not sure which one I'll go with but good to have a choice while still staying stock

  • It downloaded this morning.
So far… meh. It looks different, not necessarily better and it picked up the faster of my 2 wifi networks without being prompted. It was slick and smooth, but so was 4.4 IMO. I will get used to it but after a few hours, honestly, it does not look much better or worse, just different.

    • They are clearly targeting iOS users with the look of it all.

The bonus functionality of the notification system is definitely a winner in my eyes.

      • I hate it that you can put the phone on silent mode and cant turn off haptic feedback while typing!! driving me crazy!

        • Haptic feedback? Is that the vibrations when typing? Mine doesn't seem to do that at all (hasn't since I originally turned it off when I got the phone)

        • @Woodyg22: someone on XDA helped me to turn it off…it was in keyboard settings.
But still dont know how to put the phone on silent mode.

        • @avitherock: for silent mode press a volume button then tap on the bell icon and it will change to vibrate

        • @Woodyg22: thats Vibrate mode…I was talking abt silent mode where you can turn off the vibration too.
In earlier versions…if u pressed the volumne button after putting it on vibrate mode, it would change to silent mode. But seems like Google have removed that function.

        • @avitherock: yeah they have which is a shame.
Will just have to get used to priority and none modes

  • Just got mine this morning.

  • Just got mine this morning too (N4), is there a way to change the whole lock screen back to how it used to be? I prefer dashlock

  • If you're with Telstra there is a different image to sideload. I don't know how relevant it is, but I believe Telstra requires a unique radio - hence the Telstra image. I had issues where I couldn't send MMS when trying the developer preview so I would think this is one reason why Telstra requires a custom image. If anyone needs it PM me and I'll find the link again.
