$15000-$18000 to Spend on a Car. What Should I Get?

Hey guys,

After spending a month trying to find a job I have finally got one. I was working in Melbourne before but I sold my car before I came back to Sydney.

Anyway, since I can afford Insurance, fuel and other stuff now-it's time to get a car. I'm willing to spend 15-18k.

I'm not so much of a car expert so ozbargainers plz help

Thanks

Edit

Hey guys thanks for answering my question. I will give out a few details about myself and what i'm after
- No kids
- Mostly Weekend Driving
- After auto lights, reverse parking sensors etc
- Is Honda civic any good? Would prefer 2012 model of Mazda 3 sp25 but it's kinda outside my budget..

  • What kind of car are you after?

  • If you are not too fussy about the brand, i'd be looking at a Kia Cerato. they are packed with features which even many Japanese cars would only have as options.
If 2nd hand is your thing i'd be looking at either a Golf or a Subaru Forester.

  • do you have kids?
what are you wanting a car for - commute to work? weekend driving? hauling a caravan? to carry your road bike?
are you wanting a "safe" car e.g. corolla? or a sporty car e.g. <insert sport car name>?

  • Spend $12,000, use the rest on anything that needs fixing and first service.

Get a recent hyuandai, Toyota or Nissan. Model depends on ur needs.

  • Go reliable and get a classic Ford F150

  • +1 go a brand new Kia. Either a cerato or or a Rio. If you go for the Rio. You might be able to get one of the better models with mor features. Like reverse camera and satnav. Kia are amazing cars these days and no one else beats a 7 year warranty for peace of mind except maybe hyundai. You can normally screw dealers down by a grand or two on their listed price and get them to chuck in accessories and fuel for free amd br firm, dont let them bully you into signing anything. You write down the cheaper price you want to pay, hand it to the sales person and say this is what im willing to pay. And tell them to hand it to their manager. And then be prepared to walk away. And also play dealers off each other for prices.

  • 1 Mazda
    2 Hyandai
    3 Kia
    4 Mitsubishi
    5 Holden

I have two family members that both work for big multichain dealerships this is rated based on how what mechs say and how often they're in being fixed. They don't sell any other brands.

First 3 pretty much on par (i own an hyandai i30) with each other Mazda is the best overall.

Mitsubishi's are soildly built but the paint is thin and the interiors can be a bit flimsy.

My other car is a 2010 Holden, however the mechanics say Holdens are the most unreliable cars they service.

Check out the Ford Falcon FG, ford are making so few of them because they still have 2013 models in dealerships that they cannot sell.
The second hand market prices reflect this.

    Good luck

    • Again. Kia or hyundai over mazda. They have more then double the warranty period in new cars for much less in cost.

      • wow. down voted for putting forth a logical and cost smart opinion.
someone needs a slap in the face….. with a fridge.

          Fixed.
Don't let it get to ya. It's just the internets.

  • Hayabusa

    You know it makes sense.

In most circumstances, I wouldn't advise buying a brand new car. Better to buy a 2-3 year old low k's example and dodge the worst of the depreciation.

But in your case, with a little more saving you could get a brand new i30 Active. Five year warranty is hard to beat…unless you go for the Kia equivalent (?) which has seven year warranty.

If you don't want to spend any more than 18K?
I'd look at a (current shape) 2012 GD Hyundai i30; still under factory warranty and you'd have a few grand left over.
