AUD to USD Exchange rates

Hi, im going to the United States next year and will need to convert AUD to USD. What are the best options to manage money in America including converting AUD to USD? I was thinking about opening up a citi bank account but im not sure about the charges and which account is the most suitable as i am only going for three weeks. I am 18 by the way and probably going to bring abit more than $1000. I would like to do it before I leave which will be mid Jan next yr.Thanks

Citibank debit card would be the best way to go. No charges for anything.
Withdraw a large sum of USD at the ATMs in the US (to minimize the ATM fees). It gives a much better exchange than any foreign exchange.
You can also use your card in the US as well, but sometime you need cash in your hand.

  • It is generally considered likely that the Aussie will drop against the US. Whether you take that gamble or not is up to you though. The difference is unlikely to be any more than 10%.

  • Does anyone have any advice on where to get the best available rate for AUS$ to US$ at the moment? It's my first time overseas so a bit hesitant without advice, I have the money ready to change over now as I leave at the end of the month, thanks in advance :-)

    • Use half your cash here: www.CrownCurrency.com.au - email them for a quote, Australia Post - order online, pick up next day
Put the other half in a credit card (28D, Citibank) and use in US when needed. (Get a duplicate card in case an ATM eats one.) Tell CC co when and where you're going so they don't block your card.
