Anyone Used/Implemented Google Apps?

Hi all,

Has anyone used/implemented Google Apps? I'm trying to get some feedback on what was good and what was bad. If you don't know what I'm talking about go to www.google.com/a

Also does anyone know any cheap domain registrars for .com.au domains?

  • Sorry no experience on Google Apps, although I've known quite a few people using it.

    Pros:

    • Free
    • Lots of space, big email account, etc
    • As reliable as other Google services
    • IMAP email
    • Google is most likely to out-last your average hosting companies

    Cons:

    • Servers in San Jose (180ms return trip from Sydney)
    • Limited to Google's apps (i.e. can't install 3rd party apps)
    • Privacy?

Highly recommended if you are just getting a domain mainly for emails. As of .com.au pricing, Hostess is one of the cheapest at $25/2 year but again I have no experience with them. Personally I have used IntaServe (not recommended) and NetRegistry (ok but more expensive).

  • Thanks Scotty.

I've decide to give Google Apps a try. Will report back my experience.

As for domain name, will take a look at Hostess.

    Cheers!

  • I use Google Apps for two personal domains. One is mine, and one that I setup and manage for the family.

For my person domain I paid the US$50 for a single PRO account just because this is my PRIMARY means of contact with the world and I liked some of the extra features such as 99% uptime, 24/7 phone support (a must for mission critical situations if you've ever tried the Google Support Forums) email migration tools, and no-ads. https://www.google.com/a/help/intl/en/admins/editions.html

For the Family domain I've got them on FREE accounts as they are not as heavily entrenched in the online world as I, and the FREE version more than caters for thier needs. The main reason I set this up for them is so they can keep the same email address regardless of what ISP I organise for them as deals come and go.

My domain was already registered at GoDaddy and the web hosting and MX records were over at Netlogistics. Transferring the domains email to Google Apps is simple… as long as nothing goes wrong… I had some problems related to changing my preference from FREE to PRO halfway thru signing up to Google Apps. Took about 8 days to get that sorted with Google via the horrible free support forums. Once that was sorted out, the rest was straight forward.

For the family domain, I purchased this via GoogleApps when I registered. For anyone who doesn't already HAVE an email domain.. I highly recommend doing it this way. For US$10 and ten minutes of your time, it's a simple turn-key solution that will have your users up and running with accounts, logins, passwords and email address in less than 1 hour. DO THIS as your first choice.

It's really working out well for everyone. I'm super happy with it. Worth the $50/year for a single POWER user. And the regular users will be more than covered with the FREE version.

    • Thanks for the review!

    • Hi - I have purchased a domain from Zip hosting and want to use it only as my email address. It is not hosted anywhere yet. Can I use Google apps to host it (or do i need to get it hosted somewhere else and then transfer it across?) - then i presume it is simple to redirect/ point all emails to my ISP (OPTUS) and then get my emails using MS Outlook?

      Thanks

      Mike

      • Answering in your other thread http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/38558

        • I am impressed - answering a thread from 2007 - I didn't think you would and that is why I created a new post

          Thanks

          Mike

      • Ha interestingly I said that I had no experience with Google Apps back in 2007, and then at the beginning of 2009 I moved everything to Google — well worth it :)
