No pricing, no deal :P. More than likely it will be > US pricing anyways. I'll prob just stick with the DNS option

  • You assume that it'll be the same price as US.

No need for VPN's or DNS changer anymore_

This isn't necessarily true. As any good Netflixer knows, the content you'll be seeing in the AU Netflix would be very different to the content you'll be seeing in the US Netflix, and based on AU contracts, its likely that it would be shittier/older.

Paying the few dollars a month for a VPN and switching between UK/Sweden/US/Denmark/Netherlands/Mexico/Argentina etc gives me a Netflix library about 2-3 times larger than everyone else.

Exactly Australia Netflix well be more expensive and almost certainly not have near the quality or quantity of usa Netflix. It's a start but until Netflix cuts out this geographical restriction BS and just creates Netflix Global, Usa Netflix will pretty much always be best.

wo wo wo… i have been using netflix for months now via a VPN. Can I change the country code to then get different series/movies?

        Yeah..
        Dutch Netflix is pretty good.

  • Hey, it could be the same price as the US.
Take WWE Nework for example, its the same price here as in the US, $9.99 a month.
So it all depends on how greedy a company wants to be.

There's still a need for DNS subscription, cause the AU version will be gimped to hell.

  • Crickey, people are complaining already. The more competition we have for video-on-demand in Australia, the better the prices will be for everyone.

Not complaining, just stating a fact.
Smart DNS makes Netflix a far better product than it otherwise would be, even before Netflix Oz.

Australian Netflix is almost certainly the reason why Foxtel has dropped its subscription fees so significantly.. Trying to lock people into contracts before Netflix arrives.

  • Its success will all depend on what content is available.

  • What I'd like to see:

    • Pricing within $5pm what they charge the USA
    • Same content as what the USA has available.
    • Maybe a few aussie produced original shows.

We'll have to wait and see if any of those eventuate. Even if all are true, my slow internet speeds mean streaming isn't an option even if I wanted to switch to Netflix.

Also, I wonder if Telstra will look at pulling something like the US ISP's and throttle Netflix data until they get a chunk of the money?

    • Unlikely, as we actually do have competition here. If an ISP throttles traffic here, you can at least change ISPs.
Unlike the US where in most cases you get a choice of either Company X (AT&T, Verizon, Comcast or Time Warner) or dialup…

      • True, though we only have a few trunk lines going to the USA, if the data is stored offshore it wouldn't be hard for the Tier 1 network companies to throttle.

        • There's 3 International data cables all of which are owned by competing Telco companies..
Not an ideally large number, but when last I checked, there was still ample capacity across the 3 lines to encourage open competition.

        • I suspect Netflix would leverage the Amazon Web Services caches (CDN) as that is the platform that Netflix host on. http://aws.amazon.com/cloudfront/details/ one in Sydney and one in Melbs.

Bad news. Looks like Netflix aus will be a cut down version with all the shows that foxtel has deals with removed. http://www.news.com.au/technology/home-entertainment/netflix… It's a step in the right direction though
