Projector Deals? Looking for affordable 1080p 3D projector around $700 for a bright room

Using for games and movies. Why Dont they make 3d games anymore?!

I love ozbargain so much that I have become addicted to it and can lo longer pay full price for anything! I see TV bargains posted all the time but haven't seen a projector deal for a long time. I bought a near new BENQ W1070 projector on Ebay for near-new price and it was faulty (but otherwise excellent) Id like to buy that or something similair new so that I can claim on tax, possibly get an extended warranty and possibly get a cashback. But here in the Gold Coast, I hardly see FULL HD projectors for sale anywhere! I know officeworks has the BENQ W1070 but it seems to be backorder and around RRP. There are lots of Chinese brand projectors on Ebay but none of them seem to be 1080p yet. On Amazon US they seem to be much cheaper, though many dont seem to ship to Australia, and when they do, I wonder if shipping plus conversion fees might put the price up to near Aussie RRP (and I assume I wouldnt be getting an Aussie warranty).

Can anybody help with this?

Also - the problem I had was that the table I put it on next to the couch wasnt quite in line with screen so it was skewed - would one with a lens shift help with this? or can anyone suggest a cheap and easy way to "mount" it on the wall behind the couch?

Also wondering - the ozbargain favourite Benq W1070 is great but also a few years old… The w1080st i a bit newer but still a couple of years old… Is there a newer model full hd model, and does newer necessarily mean better? and what does "short throw" mean anyway? what is the meaning of life?

Thanks in advance.

    3d games on pc :)

I have a benq w1070 and love it. I remember there were heaps on different online stores when i bought mine last year so maybe just do a heap of googling to find stock because I'm not aware of much else in that price range

I believe lens shift is up down not left/right (though could be wrong). Can't ceiling mount? I bought a $20 projector mount on ebay the other day and was really easy to do myself and I'm not really handy at all. Or you could simply screw a shelf onto the wall and put the projector on it

short throw means you can have the projector closer to the wall to get a big image

hope that helps you get started

  • Thanks jumpo. Does the ceiling mount require screws into the cealing? And presumably it would be hard to remove the projector when I need it for work, right?

Yeh, I have mine screwed into a wood panel which is screwed onto the ceiling. If you are moving it to work often then it would be quite annoying. About 4 to remove the projector from the ceiling, then 3 to remove the projector from the mount that is screwed in.

    • I hunted around to find a ceiling mount that made the PJ "easily" removeable and settled on this.

      https://www.audioaustralia.com.au/black-compact-projector-ba…

Pull out the cables, unscrew the safety "pin", get a safe grip on the PJ, pop the little spring clips and twist.
Still end up with the "stalk" of the mount sticking up, which is screwed on, but I just prop the unit on 2 piles of books. with the stalk between the 2 piles, or just leave it inverted and use some books to attain necessary angle with the stalk sticking into the air.

Definitely still a bit of a pain, takes 3 minutes to remove (mostly due to extra care, it's far more likely to drop when removing), 60 seconds to put back in place.

The other alternative is to build/buy a ceiling mount shelf, but doesn't look as sleek.

  • Just saw that the W1070+ is now out, (though not sure about AU) slightly updated, bit brighter and such, might be easier to find if it's out here

  • You can get Chinese knockoff projectors for $300, but it may turn out similar to the Aldi one (or worse) - bad picture and noisy!

I have an LED projector (LG PA75U) and is quite good. But it is not very bright (700 lumens), works fine during night.
LG Electronics PA75U Slim LED Projector with WXGA Resolution WiDi and Smart TV (2013 Model)

I would suggest you have a look at these. These are some decent projectors which you can get for under $1K:

LG Electronics PF85U Full HD LED Projector with Smart TV and Built-In Digital TV Tuner
Optoma ML1000P WXGA 1000 Lumen 3D Ready Portable DLP LED Projector with HDMI

There are no LED projectors with zoom lens. So you have to adjust where you place the projector. Biggest advantage for LED would be bulb life (20,000+ hrs), compactness (portable), less noisy (fan) and instant on/off. But the max brightness would be 1000 lumens.

    Non-LED projectors:
Optoma HD141X Full 3D 1080p 3000 Lumen DLP Home Theater Projector with MHL Enabled HDMI Port
    BenQ W1070 1080P 3D Home Theater Projector

I think probably Optoma HD141X would suit anyone who wants a decent "value for money" projector. Btw, if you buy from Amazon, there could be a big sale on Black Friday or Cyber Monday.

Often projecting to a smooth wall is better than cheap screens. But if you have money, this is the best screen:
