iPod touch

Hi

I'm pondering whether to get an iPod touch at Costco for 240.00, I think it's 8 gigs?

Are there any cheaper?

  • i too am looking for an ipod touch 8gb, @Dick Smith its $250 + Bonus mains charger (not worth $27.95rrp btw)

I'm waiting till myer have 20% off electronics/ipod accessories, then i'll combine with a staff discount. Thats unless one of those one day sale sites has a cheaper alternative.

Also, ipods in the US are sold for USD$189, so that $220 AUD. I've got a mate whos heading that way, worst case scenario i'll ask him :) but for $10-20 saving its not worth hassling him.

1-day site just had the 8gb $139.99 plus p&h. I always seem to miss the good deals from that site.

      • +1

nah mate, thats the ipod nano. the ipod touch is bigger (like the iphone, but with no gsm/mobile contract)

        • your right sorry my bad :)

  • but that's the nano. any specials for the ipod touch?

  • @davo

so it's 250 at dicksmith and u get an EXTRA charger? do u get a charger with the Ipod normally? sorry noob question lol

    • All ipod models, Nano, touch, classic etc, come with a usb cable, that allows you to charge and transfer music off itunes. All ipods, no matter which store they are from, come with the transfer cable

If you're on holiday and you don't have you're laptop, you use an ac-usb adapter some models look like this: http://www.dse.com.au/cgi-bin/dse.storefront/4abc4d1801c38a7… . Current ipod purchases at DSE come with a similar ac-usb product. Don't let sales reps trick you into thinking its worth $30+, these things are worth $15 max, and i reckon you could get them off ebay for even less.

      Hope this helps

  • thanks for that explanation!

i looked at the costo price comparison list:
    APPLE iPODs
    8GB Nano $175.89 (jbhifi.com.au $176, harveynorman.com.au $195, apple.com/au/store $199)
    8GB Touch $294.99 (jbhifi.com.au $309, apple.com/au/store $329)
    16GB Touch $384.99 (jbhifi.com.au $398, apple.com/au/store $419)
    32GB Touch $499.99 (jbhifi.com.au $519, apple.com/au/store $549)

^ think the prices were from last month so does that mean there has been a recent price drop.

also not sure whether the one i saw at costco was the old or new model?

    • $294 for a 8gb itouch is wayyy over priced. Those are worth $250-260 at most chain stores.

The current generation of ipod touch is 4, however there is debate whether there is any difference whatsoever between the 8gb 3rd gen and 8gb 4th gen. Atm they are prices the same.(16gb 3rd gen itouch + 16gb 4th gen itouch are different, the latter gen is faster and has more features)

BTW: cost price for ipods are around about $50 off the Apple retail price. Apple actively discourages companies from selling below the RRP

  • oh ok so if there's not much difference between the 3rd and 4th gen for the 8 gig ipod touch, $240 looks a good price whatever the gen!

i think the prices i posted before were in august before the new models.

  • As far as i can tell (20miniutes on google) there may have been a firmware upgraade, tbh i can't see any difference between the models (unless anyone can correct me)

    • From WP forums:

What are the differences between the 1st gen and 2ng gen iPod Touch?

      • Thinner
      • Volume controls on side
      • Nike integration
      • Microphone support
      • Comes with 2.x preloaded
      • Integrated Speaker
      • Cheaper (then original RRP of 1st Gen)

Actually, the thinner bit isn't quite true, 2g has a sculpted back to accommodate that speaker, thinner at the edges but thicker overall at the apex! ;)

Evidently there is no difference between 2 & 3 gen 8GB touch, only the 32/64 got the iPhone hand-me-down cool features! :(

I've got a 16gb 1st gen and to be honest I've never missed any of the above new features apart from price, and Jailbreak/FW upgrade was free (I feel Apple has done well enough outta me for now) so updates aren't an issue! :)

  • also bluetooth and faster processor on the new one, which makes a hell of a difference cause these things are slowwww

just put a 2nd get touch next to an iphone and load the same game. u will have time to cook lunch, scratch ur ass and have a chat before it loads on the iphone/1st gen touch whereas the second gen wud already be done

    • Same processor, just clocked higher in the FW! There's talk of a simple FW patch to "upclock" the iPhone & 1st gen to 532 MHz, of course at the expense of battery life, which is why they were "declocked" in the first place!

I've never had any speed issues with mine, not that I do much gaming on it; but running 2.2 it's as fast and stable as I need it to be! ;)

As for differences between 8GB gen 2 & 3, from cnet reviews:
Not every member of the third-generation iPod Touch family is created equally. Essentially, the 8GB iPod Touch model is still running on second-generation hardware that uses a slower processor than the 32GB and 64GB models and lacks support for new features such as Voice Control, OpenGL graphic support, and advanced accessibility features. As we've already seen with the first-generation Touch, future updates to the iPod firmware may bring features that only the latest hardware will support. Obviously, the 8GB model's $199 price tag makes it attractive to prospective buyers, but be aware that the lower price comes at the cost of performance and a few features.

That said, of course you'd buy the latest generation if you're in the market, but as usual Apple has some tricks up it's sleeve for buyers! ;)

  • Sorry to bring up this thread, but has anyone got any experience with amazon? they're selling the ipod touch 8gb 3rd gen for $190, +$6 3-5 day shipping to aus.. = US $196 = $220 AUD… lower than cost price in australia… what do people think??
