Recommendation on a Conveyancer around Ryde / Epping (Sydney) Area

Just wondering if anyone has a recommendation on a conveyancer to use around the Ryde / Epping area in Sydney. Am a first home buyer, so haven't had to do this until now. Also, is it better to use someone local or does it not matter where they are located? I've looked online, but would really appreciate the Ozbargain community's feedback.

Also, I've got fees as low as $990 from Slater & Gordon to as high as $1500 from a different one. Any ideas on what I should pay for conveyancing for a house that seems quite standard (no subdivisions, strata etc).

  • I went through a solicitor and it cost me $1500. I think that's about what an average suburban solicitor will charge for a conveyance.

IMO it's worth getting a solicitor to do it rather than a conveyancer, and I'm a solicitor.

    • Agreed. Slater & Gordon (Conveyancing Works) does not have solicitors handle your file nor provide advice on results of searches. Ask around some suburban firms, they will be pretty competitive.

  • I used a lawyer (yup a lawyer) and it cost me $1200. Why are you looking locally? My lawyer was about an 1hour drive from me. It's not like you have to do any leg work anyway. I's the desperate agents who do most of the leg work. They drive the documents over to the lawyer and liase with them.

  • I had my property handled by a solicitor in Hurstville which is only 30 mins away from Ryde. His fees are $990 incl. GST. Let me know if you want more details :)
