Moov Fitness- Help with Compatibility

I need some help. I want to get a fitness watch as a present (and buy one myself) BUT not spend a fortune as my partner is 50/50 with watches. I found the Moov Fitness watch and atm it is only $100 incl postage. My problem is I have no idea about technology so everything is confusing me.

I have a Moto G phone and my partner has this old Nokia Lumia (windows) as his Nexus had a bath. (I think he is wanting to upgrade soon, just waiting for a decent phone)
He has an Acer a1311 tablet that I thought he could use instead of a phone.

Ok, so the Moov is only compatible with I-items until late December-ish. I found this and I really dont understand it too well:
Moov will support Android devices which have:
A Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) radio, present in some devices as part of Bluetooth 4.0.
A working BLE API that allows third-party app code to access BLE. This is present in some Android 4.3+ devices.

I found the specs to my phone and I have bluetooth 4.0 and I found the specs to the Acer and it has Bluetooth 3.0.

Questions:
1. Will the Moov be compatible with our devices?
2. Can I update the Acer to be compatiable
3. Do I need to have the phone with me when I am working out or can I upload the progress etc when I get home.
4. Is this a watch worth buying?
5. I am going to USA in feb-march, do I wait and buy one there?

I really hope I made some sense. All I want to do is buy a decent (and cheaper) fitness watch for my partner.

Thank you in advance. :)

  • Most of your questions can be answered if you actually visit the Moov Support website.

  • Unfortunately if the device uses BT4 then the phone must be BT4 also. No software or firmware upgrade will do, it's the hardware. Doubt the BT radio module can be unsoldered and new one fit in and soldered so easily.

Can't wait for module phones to become more mainstream and catch on. Pop off camera and put newer ones on, same with BT and Wifi.

Anyhow if you're going to the US might as well wait and get the Basis, it's the best one out there, does heart rate without a strap. And other cool stuff that might be a bit gimmicky.

Only downside is no open data/API to get raw data. But great value for US$150.

Australia tax would make me think most things are cheaper in the US even at $0.86 exchange rate. Or $0.84 for us retail Travelex types. Could try OzForex.
