2.5% AmEx and Motorpass Surcharge at Caltex Woolworths

So I went to my usual Caltex Woolworths (Beacon Hill) this week to fill up the car and was pretty darn annoyed to come home and find that I had been charged a 2.5% surcharge. Rang up the service station to check what this surcharge was for and the attendant mentioned that since last week, all Caltex Woolworths service stations now apply the surcharge if you pay by Amex or Motorpass fuel card (I had used the latter). There was no sign up saying that this surcharge was now in place, nor was I informed that the surcharge had been applied when I swiped my card.

Now, I understand if small independent service stations surcharge for Amex or Motorpass but surely not by a chain as big as Caltex Woolworths!? Not happy…guess I'll be filling up elsewhere from now on. Thought I'd post this so others don't get duped, but was also wondering if it really is true that this surcharge now applies to all Caltex Woolworths service stations?

  • I used my Amex in WA on Wednesday and didn't get a surcharge.

By law, they need to display that they are charging a surcharge.

It's pretty easy, just vote with your feet. They'll get the message.
    Shell and BP don't charge.

  • As far as I know, all Caltexes charged a surcharge - the ones I have visited in Southport, Annerley and Hamilton (NSW) all charged it. It is a reason I don't go there anymore and shop at Coles instead Woolworths even though the WW is slightly closer.

  • I don't get why people don't just pay using woolies e gift card. You pay 5% less for ur petrol effectively, approx 7c a litre off. Using Amex ( popular amongst some of my friends I notice ) do it for points, which don't equate to 5%, but those rewards seem to tempt some people…

OP, good idea to head back to that servo and see if there are any notices of surcharge, because they do need to have signage in store.

    • Even better, you can still earn the amex rewards by paying for the woolies gift cards with your amex card.

  • OP paid with a Motorpass in this instance which would likely have been from his novated lease company. Thanks for the tip on the gift card though, might have a look into it :)

OP, are you with Selectus by any chance?

    • Yup, unfortunately all my petrol has to go on the fuel card but for everything else Woolies-related, I always have a Wish gift card in my wallet for that extra 5% discount!

I'm with NLC for my novated lease, company-mandated so didn't get a choice but I haven't had any issues with them.

      • Off topic - when I was with NLC, I've never once used the Motorpass for years. It's always been use my own credit card to pay for it (keep in mind this pre-dates these 5% Wish cards so don't flame me) and submit a long pile of receipts every quarter.

They hated me naturally but can't exactly stop me either :)

  • Was this a co-branded outlet or just a caltex outlet that accepts the fuel offer?

    • Co-branded. Big Woolies sign with the Caltex.
