New Dash Cam (G1W-C): First Use and The Casing Is Almost Too Hot to Touch. Does This Happen To Other Users?

If anyone remembers my poor buddy's road rage incident, the stand-out advice was to get a dash-cam so she doesn't get screwed over again.

I convinced her to buy a G1W-C (based on a bunch of advice) from GearBest. Took ages to arrive and we've just tried it out. After only a few minuted of operation the casing was so hot that it was pretty uncomfortable to touch (I would estimate 55-60 deg C). It seemed to work fine, recorded to the card etc without a problem, but is this amount of heat normal for this unit?

Would love to hear from other users of the G1W-C…

  • Mine becomes relatively warm to touch but not enough to be considered uncomfortable.

Which part of the dash cam are you touching?

  • Pretty much anywhere on the unit.

  • Mine is not that hot. But when I change the settings, they don't always stick.. I suppose if it's the capacitor unit, what's the worst that can happen?

    • Do you mean that the mount doesn't stick to the glass, or the changed settings revert back to default after some time?

      • It sticks to the glass fine, when you change a setting, the new setting doesn't always save… e.g. change from 720 to 1080 mode. It takes a few goes before the new settings are applied. Once it saves properly, it's fine.

  • Is it sitting in direct sunlight? Operating temps will be detailed in the user manual. It should detail between -10° and 60°. If you are leaving the car in direct sunlight for extended periods of time, it might be a good idea to dismount it when not in use.
