Work around Optus cable modem to access Netflix

First post… be gentle! I'm wanting to take advantage of Getflix/Netflix deals but have discovered that the Optus cable modem/router I have (Netgear CG3000) does not allow the user to change the DNS… making connection to these services impossible. Just wondering if anyone has any suggestions for how to work around the problem. We have several laptops and 2 WDTV Live Streaming units as well as a wireless home theatre. The options seem to be (a) find a way of tricking the Netgear modem into accepting a new DNS, (b) setting all the other devices in the house to use an alternative DNS (not sure how to do this but this was a suggestion elsewhere), (c) get a new wireless router and set it up for a new DNS, effectively using the old Netgear as a modem only, (d) buying a new modem/router (or maybe a new NAS to bypass the settings of the modem/router. Not sure what the best option would be but definitely looking for simplicity and the lowest cost. Suggestions?

    Hello,
I purchased this router from MSY and installed DD-WRT onto it. Using Getflix's DNS service, works with chromecast roku etc but that requires a little extra set up.

Have it running connected to my bigpond modem (via Ethernet) which doesn't allow me to change the DNS either.
Plenty of guides online on how to change the DNS on a DD-WRT Router.

    http://www.msy.com.au/vic/mitcham/peripherals/5202-tp-link-t…
    Only $25.

For me this was a much easier method rather then setting each devices DNS setting. Once you connect to the modified router no additional set up will be necessary, it will just work.

Sounds like OP is not hugely technical (from some of the language used) so flashing DD-WRT is probably too scary..

The easiest (and cheapest) suggestion is to alter the DNS in each device you need to change.
All the other suggestions require far more effort and study to implement.

Pretty sure Google will have all the info you need to guide you through changing DNS OP.

One problem you may face OP is that the Optus modem might override DNS settings of your devices.
If that's the case, then the only solution is to buy a new modem, or bridge the modem to a new router (assuming the Optus Modem supports bridging).

What service are you using to get USA DNS numbers? I use Unblock-us ($5/mth) so my answers below refer to this.

You can set the DNS settings in the WD live streaming device to suit unblock-us (or whoever you are using to access USA sites).

Same with Laptops - although unblock us has a free app that can do it for you.

I signed up to netflix with Australia post rechargable credit card and a gmail email address.

  • I have optus cable and agree that unblock-us is the best, as you can simply change the DNS on the device used to view netflix as opposed to on the modem its self :)

    • Any of the Smart DNS services will work just the same.
Getlix is the cheapest that I've found.

      • I tried getflix and found them to be super slow and unreliable. hence why i did some research and found Unblock-us to have the best reviews and i have had no issues since :)

        • Saw someone else report the same thing in the recent Getflix deal thread. We've been using them for 12 months and never had a problem.

  • Shout-out for http://adfreetime.com/ been using it for a while, $2 a month, and you can pick your netflix region and also block some ads ( works great for the iPhone while on wireless )

  • If you want a hardware based solution, you'll need to purchase a router. Something like a Netgear WNDR3800 ($80 from MSY) will do the trick perfectly.

Plug your cable modem into the WAN port of the router, then plug your client devices (PCs, etc) into the LAN ports.

You'll then be able to change the DNS to whatever you want on the router, which will push the settings out via DHCP to your client devices (including any WiFi devices).

Cheaper solution is to just change your client devices DNS settings individually. Little bit more mucking around, but once it's done… it's done.

I recommend Getflix. Half the price of Unblock-US and does the same job.
