Selling on Gumtree. What do I need to do on PayPal to protect us both?'

Do I just send them an invoice - is that what covers me to ensure I get paid?

If then after receiving the item, if they change their mind, can they dispute the sale and get the money back?

They are paying postage.

    dont use paypal.
why do people keep accepting paypal offers on gumtree… 90% + of offers you receive that want to use paypal will be fake/scams.

cash , face to face only.

  • Yes, that's fine if you are in the same state. When not?? They are paying postage. What other options are there, that's my query.

dont use paypal, just meet locally, in PUBLIC PLACE - unless you are selling fridge of course!

i cant understand some people insist to come to my house to pickup small items, why they want to see my house???

    • we have a neighbour that runs a business from home and has people collecting their orders all day… where is the big problem with that?

      • +6

Probably not a huge problem if you're a big guy. But if you're a girl….
Also buyers who want to return for change of minds then accusing you for selling fakes cause it doesnt look like the high end model (they bought a low end one), then threatening to find you and force a refund.

        • Agree! They can pretend and do harmful things to the seller.

If they seem half decent you could give it a shot. You could try direct deposit. If you do post it and they pay by PayPal make sure you take photos of what your sending, the packaging etc and pay for tracking and signature. This may help your case if they do a dispute but it can be hit and miss. I've bought a couple of things on gumtree with PayPal and its gone fine but that's on a buyers side

  • Just to say again, the seller and the buyer are in different states.

It's not expensive, but I would like to get this answered once and for all. Naturally, I'd prefer to sell locally. MAybe I'll just forget the whole thing.

make 100% sure that the address you are sending it to matches the address paypal has recorded.
and pay for signature on delivery.

Oh and you can request money through PayPal and they will send the other person an invoice etc state clearly what it is they are buying and the condition it's in

Gumtree is designed for local face to face transactions, so cash on pick up after item inspection. If you still want to take the risk, make sure you send it with proof of postage, according to paypal T&Cs. There's always a chance of buyer claiming they didnt receive it, do a chargeback on you, leaving you with no money and no item. I only hope you're selling a low cost item. Search up "gumtree paypal" on whirlpool to get a taste of what could happen.

If you do end up being scammed, pls dont complain back on here.

Thanks, I will make sure not to complain back on here as per your instruction.

I was asking for advice, some people have been helpful, thanks to those.

    • You're welcome

If you really want some protection create an sale for item on ebay and do the transaction through paypal on there. Costs a little more, but some protection actually exists. Paypal and Gumtree dont have any ties that allow both the buyer and/or the seller protection. Gumtree clearly state face to face only, therefore there is no contact of a purchase which is required for paypal to have any legs

  • Thanks cypher, very useful advice. I'll forget interstate people from now on when on Gumtree.

EDIT, I can see a lot of people on here offering postage for their classifieds ….

    • 90%+ of people are honest, and there is the opportunity to avoid the 10% ebay fee, so I am not surprised there are plenty of people offering to post stuff on Gumtree. I have bought and sold the same way with zero problems.
If you are at all worried that you won't get paid after you post the item, then don't use gumtree, as it offers no protection against dishonest buyers.
I am lucky enough to be able to risk $40 or $50 without it being catastrophic, but if such a loss was a problem, or I was selling/buying a higher priced item, I wouldn't recommend gumtree using post.

If you want to attract a sale from interstate then use ebay.
Gumtree used to tell you that it is best to sell locally, in person and strictly for cash. Made sense to me.

Anna… while you are packing the item take a few pics. It helps to have evidence just in case they try the shipped incomplete, wrong item, faulty, etc trick.
Over the years I have sold many things on ebay that had to be shipped and never had a problem. Sadly there is always that one germ out there waiting to strike and thus the reason for taking so many precautions. Ruins it for all of us.

  • The fact is Gumtree, Paypal and eBay are owned by the same company.
Gumtree even has an option when selling to "link your paypal account to let buyers know you'd like to be paid via Paypal".
This is to use sales on Gumtree that otherwise generate no income, to make money for them (2.4%) on the payment.

There absolutely is seller and buyer protection on paypal without using eBay. Check paypals terms and conditions and make sure you use their paypal address only, not another one. Get them to SMS you their paypal address so you at least have a phone number too.

Send them a paypal invoice CLEARLY stating what they're getting and keep the tracking details.
Taking pics of items and packaging can't hurt either and keep them updated.
All aust post parcels are now trackable by default but for 3 bucks you can add signature.

This is coming from my own direct experience using both ebay and gumtree. In fact I recently sold some brand new hard drives to a fellow oz bargainer using paypal for payment… There's still some left so Check my classified listings while you're reading ;)

  • I would just be saying to them, you know there's plenty of scammers on there - that you're honest, will return their money if x happens (whatever x is) - that they know themselves they wouldn't prefer to receive paypal because it's easily reversed - so bank deposit only please. We shouldn't be made to apologise for not wanting to be ripped off, just as they shouldn't. Those are your terms - you know you're honest. The decision is up to them.

Also suggest things like they have someone near you they know look at it first - even if they don't know anyone, it scores a few points. If they're not prepared to do that, really, who cares. There must be people closer to you that would buy it - because you did. Just wait a bit longer for another buyer.

  • Thanks guys, all wise words from experience. As it's a cheap item anyway if I don't sell I'll give it to Vinnies or just anyone I can think of. I think I'll just stick to local buyers, it's just too much hassle and time wasting otherwise. It reminds me of why I stopped selling on ebay - just can't be bothered.
