American Express BMW Partnership Ending

I just received a letter from Amex that said the following:

Dear Mr <lastname>,

We are writing to let you know that the agreement between BMW and American Express has come to an end. We swould like to thank you for supporting this partnership and look forward to continuing to serve you.

Your account is being automatically transferred to an American Express Gold Credit Card Account
Even though the partnership has ended, you are still a valued American Express Card Member. We are automatically transferring your American Express Card Account ending in <number> to an American Express Gold Credit Card Account after 8 December 2014.

I suspected this might mean that I now had to pay an annual fee so I rang amex who said that all existing card features including $0 annual fee would be retained.

Just thought I'd let any other Ozbargainers know as this probably affects 1/2 of Ozbargain.

  • Thanks for the heads up!

  • Thanks, is that this card? https://www.americanexpress.com/au/content/frequent-flyer-ca… They don't seem to have a gold card. If its the premium card this is great news.

Based on what Amex told me over the phone absolutely nothing is changing except the look of our cards - when we are due to be issued a new card the BMW logo will not be present.

Interest rates, free ascent rewards and $0 annual fee will all stay the same. The BMW amex card is a really good deal compared to what's available now so it's great that nothing is changing.

      • Thanks, it must not be an advertised card. I got the letter today also.

  • Thanks heaps for this, I just got the same letter from AMEX and automatically thought that it sounded ominous… I should have more faith in global financial institutions :D

Half of OzB drives BMW and also has this card? Wow.

    • Not sure if you are being tongue in cheek but in case you're not: Lots of Ozbargainers got the BMW Amex a few years back because it came with a free $200 david jones voucher and was free of annual fees for life and had free ascent rewards. It's probably not half of ozbargain but I reckon there'd be quite a lot of us.

      • Ah missed that one. That's pretty neat, if I knew about it I would have joined too.

Here I thought you had to have leased or bought a BMW before you could get that card.

I think it was meant to be for BMW owners only so eventually it got taken down after amex complaining. They had no easy way of knowing who was a BMW owner and who wasn't so the vast majority of applications got approved.

  • Makes sense. Amex Beemer partnership got OzBargained. Feel for those legit BMW owners, which is quite something. A first of sorts.

Sucks when it gets ruined like that. But they really should check or make it invite only or with exclusive code.

  • Just bringing this up again because I noticed in my card just recently that I was charged a $49 'membership rewards' fee - I tried to bring up the initial BMW post but it was taken down, all i found was https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/79549

Anyone else with the previous BMW card get this charge? Can we fight it?

    • Yeah, I got that fee as well. I sent a email via the contact form and they reversed it. You have to change from the qantas rewards program to the in house program.

      • Thanks for the info dave - is there any problem/difference using the in-house program? Wait - that's still going to earn me qantas points, yes?

        • Nah I don't think you get qantas points.
