How Much Are You Guys Willing to Pay for Gym?

Hey guys,

I am going into 1st year uni next year and was looking to join a gym. My school had a proper gym for free so I didn't bother joining commercial gyms.

I live in Doncaster, currently I am looking at:

  1. Jetts Fitness $13.95/week BUT $140 joining/access fee. Been inside, really small gym.
  2. Genesis Fitness $13.95/week; first month free
  3. Fitness First: $23/week

How much are you guys paying at the moment for gym? Is FF worth its price tag? Also, are there usually good deals around such as free joining at the start of the year? And is it possible to bargain with the club on joining fees?

Cheers!

Try to see if other people are selling their membership to the gym on gumtree. Often gyms make you sign up for a year or 2, but people give up after maybe 6 months. So rather than paying the $15/week at the gym, they would rather someone take over and they pay the transfer fee.

My wife has gotten a good deal at our local gym bargaining with the guy from the gym. The guy matched the gumtree price and only a 6 month obligation. Also, he gave her fee free to put the gym membership on hold for a month if we need to go on holiday.

    • 6 months? More like 2 weeks sir ;)

      Dem gainz!

  • I'd be reluctant to join a gym unless it's pay per visit.

Heaps of complaints on WP of people being screwed by gym contracts is enough of an indication i don't want to be part of one. imo FF seems to be in the lead of slimey sales tactics.

If I were planning to go to the gym regularly, I'd be reluctant to go for pay per visit. Usually you'd get screwed on pricing. If you're only going to go on occasion, you're probably going to get limited benefit from it so you might as well not join.

      • From my experience people buy a subscription, go for the first week/month, then not go any more. Those savings are lost over a 1 year subscription

  • Hard to comment on which deal to go for without knowing the quality of the gym and your goals. Do they have enough equipment for you to vary your workout?

Fitness First has the benefit of a great domestic and international network. If you're in first year uni though, you might not need an extensive network. When I travelled for work (domestically and internationally), having the gym network was a god-send.

I also lucked out and signed up during a promotion, so for many years I was paying $40 a month for FF. After they revamped their pricing recently, it got bumped up to $32 a fortnight. For what I need, it's still pretty reasonable.

If you only need to go to one gym and it's got the equipment you need (or think you'll need in the future), then just go with the cheapest one.

  • I joined crunch fitness because they offered no joining fee and also $300 for 12months + 3months free at the time, so it works out at about $5 a week. The equipment is quite nice as well as the one I go to (Bankstown) is fairly new.

Not sure if they do the no joining fee now but I think student joining fee was $6.

  • I get $10 a week, $20 dollar joining fee (this gets you the RFID access card) at Challenge Me Fitness.

The gym isn't super big but it has quite a few number of machines, good enough for me.

  • I've found Jett's has far less staff and "community" around it than Fitness First (and Goodlife, I was at the same gym when Goodlife bought out Fitness First in Adelaide) BUT it does have one major attraction for me: no contract period.

For me Jett's works out a lot better although I have to say I left Goodlife in a bit of a huff because they weren't maintaining equipment to a standard I wanted over a long period whilst simultaneously joyously informing members about how quickly they were expanding.

In my estimation Goodlife might be worth the extra amount provided you are very much into group fitness and making friends around that and you believe you will use the entire contract period. I wouldn't count on using the entire contract period unless you already have a year or two of consistent training behind you because everybody is a terrible predictor of their own behavior but believes they are excellent at predicting what they will do in the future - basically I would assume you will not use the contract period if you are new to fitness because 90% of people do not and every one of them predicted they would use the gym for 12 months rather than 1.

But if you don't want those things then my recommendation is Jett's.

  • Stay away from FF.

Jett's is best. Can use any gym and 24/7. They do no signing fee discounts or 50% off signing fee sometimes. Ask them to waive it, if not look around for flyers and ads.

Stop by other locations and see if they have the flyer or can join there without paying signing fee.

  • Hmmm, I don't know about your university, but my university provides decent discount to its students and staff. Perhaps check up with them as well?

  • Have you guys been to Anytime Fitness?

I have a Jetts 5 minutes walk from my house, but the gym is really really small. Like below a carpark…

    • Sounds like you live near the Pines, like me. I haven't checked out Jetts but I use Anytime Fitness (Mitcham, I don't like the Doncaster one). I waited for a new Anytime Fitness to open (Richmond in my case) and signed up there, as a foundation member. You can negotiate a good rate with no fees (I'm on $11/wk) and after the first month you can train at any Anytime.

      • WOW how'd you figure that out :D Yes I do live near The Pines and joined Jetts already. It's pretty good for a small gym, except when it gets crowded!

  • My gym is voyage fitness and costs $11 a week.

  • the industry is saturated and there are too many gyms, for an ozbargain'er this is sensational news - they're all negotiable !

i negotiated with jetts, no joining or stupid access fee plus additional 3 months on top of 12 month - no contracts etc but paid up front for $549 being roughly $9/wk which i was comfortable with.

    • I'm thinking about joining Jetts… that is a great deal!

Which branch did you negotiate with? and how long ago was this?

I remember the time I tried to cancel my FF membership… they treated me like s#it…

I have heard good things about Jett's fitness…….I go to a council run gym…luv zumba fitness ..me and my mate go amd we are the only guys and there about 30 women in the class , which gets the blood pumping…I always go the back of the class for optimal viewing position

  • I have used FF and i would never again unless the price is right. Massive rip off and the equipment is outdated or not looked after and maintained. If a machine is out of service, it stays like that for a long time!

I am currently at Crunch fitness. I cancelled the current membership and re-signed as a new member at $299 for 16 months. I am a regular user (4 - 5 a week).

I don't get joining fees. You are essentially paying them to pay them for their service! They should pay you to get your business ;)

  • I go to Jetts. Small but pretty cheap, I joined before they put the price up, so I'm still paying $11.95/w.
If you wanna join them, just wait till they have $0 joining fee (still need to pay for the card btw), I joined when that was happening and ended up paying $45 for the card which I thought was expensive but better than full joining fee.
