You mean 9 year olds in China? Probably right…..

  • Hard to believe they get away with it.

  • hard to believe the company still survive! how much loss they have to take every year?

RM Williams certainly make pretty much the highest quality shoes money can buy, I'd wager that their shirts are extremely well made and certainly worth the money.

This assumption may have been the case in the past but not these days. Things have definitely changed. About 10-15 years ago I used to proudly wear all Australian Made clothing including underwear, socks, shoes, jeans, shirts and a lot of it was from RM Williams. Very limited availability and it came at a very high cost but I was all for supporting Aussie manufacturing so I was fine with that… but then about 7 years ago everything changed. Most of the remaining Aussie manufacturers decided to go offshore yet they still charged the same amount for their products and that's where I drew the line. I'm looking at you Bonds, RM Williams, Sportscraft etc.

In protest I decided to purposely go out of my way to not support them by buying the cheapest yet decent clothing I could find and to be honest I was very surprised with the quality of most of it! Dropping down from $125 RMW shirts & $200+ RMW jeans to $4 JAG Polos & $10 JAG jeans for example (courtesy of OzBargain deals!) was liberating and in fact I'm wearing the JAG combo right now! Most of my Chinese, Indian, Bangladesh sourced clothing has lasted equally as long as the uber-expensive stuff I used to buy so go figure! I probably went through three pairs of $300 RMW boots over 15 years and sure they're very, very good and wore them every single day for work & play however I'm currently wearing a pair of KEEN shoes (another OzBargain deal!) that cost me less than $40 delivered and have lasted 2 years with the exact same wear. They're looking pretty bad now sure but that's why I bought two pairs :) $80 vs $300 for the same amount of comfort & wear… I've seen the light and it ain't RMW sorry.

I think I'm one of those odd people who buy things for quality & value for money, not just because of the brand. Strange hey ;)

        hear…hear…
not strange if you choose value over brand/money/price. you're a reasonable person.
some think money/position is some kind of gods or make them as one

cannot agree more about that 'luxury price' of some basic items but made in certain Asian countries.

RM Williams shoes are still made in Adelaide though, and their quality is great still.

        • … and I completely agree, they are excellent quality! The point I was trying to make in my lengthy rant above (sorry about that) was that you can't assume that because one product is good then everything else will be the same. Another point I was trying to make was from the 'value for money' aspect in that I personally get around the same value from two pairs of $40 shoes than I did with my $300 RMW boots. That's an extra $260 over 4-5 years to blow on OzBargain deals :)

      • in other words, when someone says 'pay more for quality clothes because they will last longer' tell 'em to get stuffed! lol

I can buy 62 pcs of the $1 from sportsdirect for each of this from RM. OTH, I bought one of their boots in their last sale for $200 which I really like. So, boots from RM = Yes, polos = No.

    Great deal on RM Polo's.
    These are fantastic quality.
Thanks for sharing! Wish there was more deals for RM stuff

    • RM employee or relative?

      • -3

Nope, not affiliated at all. Just appreciate their quality.
I only own two or three things by RM, but all have lasted a long time and look good as new even though 2 years old.

It's like buying a BMW compared to a Hyundai. Or a surf brand compared to Kmart.

I see no reason why i was negged other than someones person opinion.
This is a good deal, for what they are and the price they are. :)

        • +3

I haven't been there for a while but last time I went the clothes were all made in China and certainly did not look very well made at all. This sort of pricing would be OK if they were made in Australia to a high standard.

        • A good deal, seriously? $60 for a polo shirt? You need to shop around more.

  • +1

    The shirts are garbage
Boots are the only thing worth buying from RM's

    • I've got a $109 belt… that still stinks of cow (2 years on)… but I bet it's gona last me a life time.

    • The boots are flipping expensive, but I took the punt on a set. I'm hoping they last me 10 years + because thats the only way i'll get value out of them.
      Comfort-wise they are awesome.
i got a belt with the boots, it's also very well-made.

  • +1

Well they certainly don't look anything special, they better be made damn well for this price.

  • +3

Was given 2x RM Williams t-shirts for Christmas a couple of years back:
Stitching started to come away by March.
Then one of the shirts started to fade inconsistently later that year.
    Worst clothing I have received.

Apart from boots, their quality is on par with every other cheap import store, not $62.50 for a shirt level.

    • And they want more for delivery! - spose $125 probably doesn't give them enough wiggle room to cover postage…

  • From Wiki : Some R. M. Williams products are now made outside of Australia (mostly in China and SE Asia), this includes t-shirts, caps, seasonal shirts/shorts, polo shirts and some leather wallets

    How disappointing

  • +1

RM Williams was just bought out by Louis Vuitton. Expect prices to rise even more now.

    • but made in some Asian countries

    • Correct. There's hardly anything Australian about them anymore.

  • I have a boatload of RM Williams stuff and wear it most days after work year round. Guernseys, polos, trousers, belts etc. Never had a problem with the quality. Cheaper than Polo by Ralph Lauren if that's any consolation.
