Coles coffee capsule machines

Coles currently have Lavazza Modo Mio and another similar (same?) at $49. Not sure if this is not a fairly permanent special.
I'm interested in a small coffee maker as a present for my uni student son who has a very small kitchen and will normally be making coffee just for himself. He will have to choose his capsules, so the cost of these is important too.
Are these good units and advice too on the relative cost of capsules too please?

  • My $49 A modo mio machine is very compact. Footprint in kitchen is less than an ipad size. Only espressos. Its has great coffee too. Shame the pods are never on sale. $10-$11 for 16 pods. Espressotoria machine has cheaper pods but coffee is milder to my taste.

    • You can get one capsule designed to make a lungo.

Lavazza Capsules are very rarely onsale.

I get the premium ones usually $11-13 - terra is my favourite, I usually get them from the good guys with click and collect when they do % off deals.

You can only usually get 3 capsule types from coles.
Works out to be 70c a coffee.

You may want to consider going the Aldi route even though their machine is larger - pods are a lot cheaper arguably doesn't taste as good.

  • Update - the other model at Coles for $49 is a Capino coffee capsule machine, which uses the Espressotoria system capsules. Brands on display using this system were CafĂ© Aurora, Chicco D'Oro and Vittoria.

  • My modo mio makes nice coffee but as previously mentioned the pods have been on sale 1x at coles since I bought the machine in may. The caffitaly pods (coles stock numerous brands for this pod size and a machine too) do go on sale regularly. I don't know how good these are.

Currently I watch out for sales on modo mio pods at myer, djs and good guys as they have a better range. Good guys have had good sales on the pods in the past.
