Google Play credit with Telstra sim

I've got $90 in Telstra credit and I'm looking for the best way to use this credit before it expires. I've read about CreditMe2U but that is of little value to me (I'm on a plan so no need for extra calls/data especially since you can't do a transfer from prepaid to postpaid). I read about Google Play credit and got a bit excited as I thought I'd be a good way to rent a few free movies - unfortunately, I don't have any Android devices as home (Mac and iPhone only). I also read you need an Android phone to link your Google Play account against your Telstra credit. Would I still be able to do the following?

  • Use old work (Android) phone to rent Google Play movies through my Telstra credit.
  • Watch the movie via the Google Play Movies app on iPad (and Airplay it to my TV perhaps?)

If not, any other suggestions what to do with $90 in Telstra credit?
I guess I could buy a few music albums but I use Spotify and am quite happy with that.

    Yes, you can do this.

You need an Android phone (or tablet with sim) and a Telstra Sim in it.

It will show up as one of the billing options when you go to make a purchase.

I have mostly Android devices but also an iPad mini, I just checked for you and I can see 2 movie rentals that I can play on the iPad with the Google Play Movies & TV app.

I should mention I have also 'purchased' quite a few movies on GP but none of these are visible in the iPad app. It seems only rentals are there, it does include TV Shows in addition to movies so that might help you spend the $$

  • Thanks for checking nismo, much appreciated! Some of the app reviews say that AirPlay doesn't work though, any thoughts on that?

    • Have never used AirPlay, don't have any other apple device at home (and happy not being in the apple ecosystem!)

Having said that, the Google Play iPad app streams fine to my Chromecast!

After you purchase the movies from Google Play Store you can watch them via https://www.youtube.com/purchases on your computer

You could also cancel spotify and get a subscription to Google Music All Access for $11.99p/m with the telstra credit

  • Fantastic, thanks jesseb05, didn't realise that! My Sony TV has YouTube access so if AirPlay doesn't work this would be a great alternative!
