NISSAN NAVARA D40 MILEAGE before Timing Chain Repair

Hi,
Just wondering if anyone here owns a Nissan Navara d40 2.5 liter diesel?
I have a 2008 and have read that these cars are lemons that need a timing chain replacement near the 100k mark.
So far I have done 100k and have noticed on a cold start up in the morning it makes a rattling noise for like 5 sec before it goes quiet.

So I plan to have my chains replaced with an upgraded dual chain from yd25.com.au

Anyone else replaced theirs? and how many KMs did you do before it?
thanks guys

Read the manual. Specifically the service log, it will tell you what is required when.

Or why not ask yd25.com.au they would know more about this

  • It would be expected to last well over 100,000Km.. that's normally when a timing belt is due for replacement!
Having said that, just because the expected lifetime is more, doesn't exclude it as a possibility. Maybe you got a lemon, maybe something else is wrong that has caused damage to the chain, or maybe it's not the chain.. A half decent mechanic should be able to tell you in seconds.

Careful with the advice you are offering here. They don't have an individual lemon here. A quick Google tells all

However if you are the owner of a D22 or D40 Navara with a YD25 engine (2.5 litre diesel), or a Pathfinder with a 2.5 litre diesel, there is an issue with these engines that you really need to be aware of and that is premature engine timing chain failure.

And they say don't rely on hearing noises to indicate impending doom

      • My advice was "just because the expected lifetime is more, doesn't exclude it as a possibility."

A timing chain that only lasts 100,000Km is a Lemon in my books.. even if it's an engineering flaw more than a manufacturing one.
Gotta wonder how Nissan haven't done a voluntary recall on this!

        • A chain should last the life of the car… an example is GM V8s which see 300,000 - 400,000 before chain issues. By then the car is toast anyway.

A bad example is GM V6 engines which sees the same nonsense you see here… sub 100,000 chain issues means there's a design or material fault.

my friends 2007 went at 90,000km and its a interference engine so metal was everywhere. Id recommend spending the money getting it replaced now rather than $5k+ for a new engine replacement. Any noises isnt a good thing and i remember before it went bang noticing the noise it was making, also i would get the tensionors replaced at the same time.

Thanks guys, Nissan ain't the same as it use to be. They were rock solid cars in the past. I blame Renault

  • Rattle on start up is possibly the lifters, my nissan did this, as well as every other car I encountered of the same model.

That doesn't mean you don't have issues,i just think that the noise is not a sign of any issues.

  • I just done one at 156000kms, the symptom was stalling untill it warmed up.

    • my 08 navara d40 was stalling on start up. this is an issue with the fuel filter. the seals crack and let air in and when car starts the air goes into the engine causing it to stall a couple of times on starting. Replaced fuel filter for $190 and problem went away instantly.
